I have the standard SX extended cab with the standard infotainment and my son want to install a JBL infotainment. Is it possible just to swap it? or needs some wiring?

    welcome!
I am not the audiophile here, but I think the JBL equipped models used an amp and a different ohm rating that is not standard.
Either way, it doesn't sound like many are thrilled with the Tacoma's JBL stereo, so you may search that too.

Thank you, all the research indicates JBL is not the way to go. However, what about the other Premium (non JBL) head unit? Can I swap to any of those models?

This is a pretty broad question and there's an entire AV subforum: https://www.tacomaworld.com/forums/audio-video.12/

You can swap the head unit but it will require additional wiring, although it's pretty trivial. The premium JBL system in higher trims isn't just a head unit, its also an amp and speakers, so is a pretty involved upgrade.

Most people have success with the WC6600NEX: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/new-pioneer-dmh-wc6600nex-flush-mount-install.668580/

Or the Sony XAV 9500ES which you can buy as a kit for the Tacoma: https://trailgridpro.com/products/sony-xav-9500es-plug-play-bundle-16-22-tacoma

Both are reasonably easy installs. They require extra wiring but it's plug-and-play without any tools required.

Give Crutchfield a call... they usually are good about what works. They'll set up a cart for you and all that's needed. I've used them on two factory swaps and I had a discussion about our 3rd Gen tacoma... just didn't keep the vehicle long enough to do the swap.
