A few houses up, the people don't seem to understand they can't leave their trash out. It's been scattered all over the road by critters multiple times. A month or so ago, a bear dragged one of their trash barrels across the road and ripped apart several kitchen bags spreading the contents all over the stream bank. Another neighbor talked to them about it around then.

Last week I noticed it was still there, so I wrote them a not so nice note with photos and put it on their door. I gave them 48 hours and contacted the health department, giving them the background that these people seem to have no interest in dealing with the situation. They went up to take a look - found a package in the garbage that confirms it's theirs - and are holding a meeting to discuss what action to take against them. At the time that I left the note, a tiny piece of my brain thought "is this a 'karen' thing to do."

However, yesterday was 6 days after leaving my note and they still haven't cleaned it up. Any tiny bit of sympathy I had for the situation is totally gone and I hope they get a nice hefty fine.

I assume it's a bear, anyway - to get an entire barrel across the road, it certainly wasn't a bunch of raccoons.

We keep our trash in the garage until the morning it gets picked up. They have a big barn/garage and a shed so I don't know why they insist upon leaving it all outside all the time. One neighbor says the guy was out trying to shoot the bear recently, because apparently in his mind one bear is a problem and other bears, raccoons, etc. totally won't be attracted to the garbage.

If he shoots the bear out of season, that could stir the pot quite a bit.

Yup, I saw that if he does that it's a whole EPO thing. If my understanding of hunting laws is correct, he's also too close to the road and another dwelling to legally shoot anything even in-season.

I sort of figured that also, but that part's harder to prove (where it was shot). The EPA doesn't mess around, he could end up in a legal shitstorm if they get on his case.

IDK where exactly you're at but in VT, if you shoot a bear w/o a tag, the only thing that might keep you from getting got is that it was in your livingroom and actively gnawing off your grandmother's leg. It doesn't matter where they are or what they're doing, and there's absolutely no "nuisance" provision. I suspect most of New England is the same.

Yeah, MA's wording was basically "don't do it".

That's right North of me. I wasn't paying attention last week and hit it, and it threw my damn cruiser about 1/4 into the passing lane. Fortunately nothing broke but that thing is fucking ridiculous

How many negative expo points do I get for making my own HD crossbars instead of buying a new rack? Strutchannel wrapped in 3m automotive vinyl with grade 8 hardware, some fender washers cut down to slide into the factory rack channels and channel nuts behind the cut down fender washers. Surprisingly no noise at speed, probably cause it's so low to the roof. 20230722_190717.jpg
