I have always had a shifting issue with my 16' since I bought it used in 18' (we all know they have there shifting issues) I ordered my OVtune a couple years back and loved how smooth it was and the power I gained. I still can't seem to beat a shifting point as my truck accelerates around a turn usually in a low gear, it will then decide to slam into gear hard enough to make you white knuckle the wheel as if you were about to get into an accident. I've been dealing with this for 5 years now and after bringing it up to tacoma 4 times and not having any luck, I may be leaving the toyota community. If anyone has had this issue please help I want to keep this truck, but I shouldn't have to compensate how I drive because of toyotas fault...

Have you ever checked your ATF fluid?

Also, if you're running the original OVtune...that is SOOOO outdated. Current tunes are waaaaay better than that OG tune. Shifting and powerwise.

if you have the OVTune software then you can just buy a tune pack and do it yourself. KDMax is a great option.

@TacoManOne is correct and obviously I agree with him :) Just to add to what he mentioned - the tune packs you get from VFTuner are very basic and are meant to be a starting point for people developing their own tunes. To get the most benefit, you need to purchase a tune pack from a tuning group like KDMax or several others who have built a fully refined tune. Also, if you've been having trouble for a while, I would suggest doing a reset of the learned values before flashing whichever tune you buy so your ECU can start from a clean slate. It it will run a bit crappy at first but after a couple of tanks of gas the ECU will have had a chance to re-learn.

Reset process for VFTuner (verify this procedure with whichever group you buy your tune from): Do not hit prepare ECM first. Click the "Reset ECM" button, let it finish, then click the "Clear TCU" button and let that finish. Once those complete, click "Prepare ECM" and follow the normal flashing procedure for the tune you decide to go with.

A current tune wont cure low speed shift issues like yours. Dont waste your money. Same problem here. No cure other than maybe atf fluid change at precise levels. Lots of people complain about it.

Many, not all, modern tuners committing highway robbery selling smiley friendly pseudoscientific vague claims for 400+ bucks like “may or may not increase mpg” …”increase horsepower” (that you never will feel)…

Lol outdated, yet OV still selling it for a couple hundred. I still remember the days of everyone exclaiming OV tune pack was the best thing to happen to Tacomas, and would make everyone’s problems go away. Now that cycle repeats with other tuners using their software. Yet to see anything fix the bogging/slamming into gear while turning if your truck is one of the ones that does it. I’m in that boat for 5 years and have accepted it while rolling the stock Toyota tune after trying a few aftermarket ones.

Can't say I've ever experienced that issue. Why would you revert back to stock though? The latest tunes are lightyears ahead of the OEM tune. What tunes & versions did you last try? Out of curiosity.

    This

the early trucks were commonly under filled from the factory. Do a drain and fill in the trans.

Thanks for all the responses so fast! I brought it into toyota for the issue a few times as stated above. They said they would flush the Trans fluid and replace, each time they "said" they did that I never noticed much difference. The "slamming" into gear happens probably a few times a month and I drive this truck everyday, I can't say I've noticed the issue stopping at a light. It ALWAYS happens in situations like exiting a round about where I will turn my wheel right to enter the circle, then turn left to go around the circle and then back right to exit, add in acceleration and the gears shifting and my rpms fly sky high and it slams gears... I may have my local mechanic check the Trans fluid this time.
