Does the TPMS take time to relearn tire positions after rotation?

I’ve got a 2017 and have rotated my tires a couple times each year for 5 years. I typically do the back tires forward and the fronts across and to the back.

This past week I rotated my tires and when I was adjusting pressure I realized the TPMS system still thought the PS front tire was in the PS rear position. I like my TPMS display to be perfectly even so I kept adding air to what I thought was the right tire and seeing it increase in the wrong spot.

I have never experienced this before. In the past the TPMS seemed to just magically sort itself out, but I never adjusted pressure so soon after rotation in the past.

So my question is whether the TPMS just needs time to re-learn what tire is where, based on radio signal strength from the in-tire transmitters or have I somehow screwed the TPMs system up this time and need to calibrate it or something?

No. There's a button under the steering wheel. Read the manual and it tells you what button to press and for how long

Toyota doesn't just re-learn. It needs to be programed by the programming software

As stated in the manual the TPMS button will learn programmed sensor id locations. But you are correct that if you are rotating in a 5th sensor or swap sensors you have to reprogram

You're fine. You don't need to do anything. Location of sensors doesn't happen instantly.

I never use the reset button and never bothered to see how long it takes the truck to find the new locations.

You've probably already seen your locations corrected by now.

Yeah. This was my experience in the past. Never pressed any button and it worked itself out.

In the past it always figured it out on its own perfectly. I just checked my truck and it’s all back to normal. No buttons pressed.

my mistake was not giving it time.
