I use to carry a 357 for my edc but have switched over to a 9mm Glock. I have several 357’s and mostly shoot 38’s out of them. 38’s cost a lot less and have less recoil. I also think they are as lethal as 357’s but I’m sure some may argue the point. Even when I carried a shorty 357 I generally loaded it with 38’s because the less felt recoil makes for more accurate follow up shots. At the range I still shoot 357 loads but most of my shooting with the 357mag is with 38’s.
OP , out of curiosity what distance were you shooting those splatter targets?

140g Hornady FTX Leverevolution handloads. They do 1200fps out of the SP101. That's a lot more FPS than a 38.

357mag ballistics are obviously superior to 38’s, I’m not arguing that. I’m saying 38’s (including +p) are quite lethal. If you hit center mass (human) , it doesn’t much matter 357 or 38, both are going to destroy organs, heart, lungs, liver, kidney etc. The reason I prefer 38’s in a 357 mag for edc (I no longer carry a 357 instead carry a 9mm)is that the weight of a 357 gun along with shooting 38’s makes for less recoil and thus more accurate rapid 2nd, 3rd and subsequent shots. You can more quickly reacquire the target after each shot than you can with hot load 357’s. If ballistics are a persons main concern in self defense then carry a 44 mag or 50 cal or go for it with a S&W 460 (I’m kidding of course).
I carry a 357mag loaded with 357 mag when in the wilderness (a 44 mag when in grizzly country)but that’s a way different situation than carrying urban self defense.

Well, yeah. A ball-peen hammer is also quite lethal if it's used optimally. You should see my 10mm loads. Pooooyeee! And it's only one millimeter more than 9mm :)

    You guys are gonna laugh...
I work from home. Sometimes I go a week without so much as picking up my wallet.
My "EDC" is a set of Sponge Bob Pajamas and Oofa's Sandals. If I'm carrying anything it's a TV Remote I accidentally stuck in my pocket and walked off (Roku remotes are small and rounded).

When I go out, keys, wallet, watch, wedding ring, phone - because I'm just running to the grocery sore a mile a way to pick up groceries. And I do mean pick up. I drive up, call them, they load it and I drive away. Only other place I frequent is the gym and you can't carry there or I go do volunteer work at the fire station and that's a Non-Permissive Environment.
So my Everyday Carry is a bit boring. Nothing tacti-cool about that.

My EWC, or Every Weekend Carry, is a bit different...
For starters, I'm wearing real clothes. Durable pants, trail hiking shoes, moisture wicking under shirt and a loose T-Shirt.
We also have a backpack we call "The Weekender." It has a pretty stout first aid kit, some water, Liquid IV, sun screen, cheap used sunglasses, flash light, chem lights. If we are shopping I'll use it to carry stuff we pick up along the way. Sometimes I'll have a ham radio, Yaesu FT-60, in the bag. Even with an extended range antenna it doesn't poke out of the backpack. I'll keep it tuned to emergency dispatch frequencies for the area we are in and a little ear bud in my ear wired to it (but I don't do this when we go into the Phoenix Metro Area because it would literally go off all the time with tons of hyper irrelevant traffic).

And the one thing everyone want's to know, in addition to keys, wallet, watch, wedding ring, phone, there is a pocket knife (LESS THAN 3" - because legally it's not a "weapon" in my area and dickwad security guards at NPEs can't do anything about that) and a Smith & Wesson M&P 9c or full sized 9 2.0. The compact one is for CC, larger is for OC depending on where I'm going and what I'm doing. And if it's the back country, I'll trade up to a 357 because it is effective on the smallish black bears we have in Arizona.
