I'm coming to end of my search for a new vehicle and I want to do everything I can to avoid buyers remorse. This would be my first Tacoma. I just considered finding a rental agency that'd be a good long term test drive and saw that Toyota dealerships have a Try Before You Buy rental program. Has anyone used this or considered it? What was your experience?

So you’re not sold on a Tacoma and want to rent one for a few days to try it out.

Good plan. But you do not need validation from us to rent a car for a few days.

See if you can find a two year old truck (or so) on Turo and take it for a weekend.

One where it's been lived in and the ECM has all of it's learned values set. You can see for yourself how the plastics and upholstery have aged, how the suspension had settled, and how the engine performs after it's had some miles on it.

Then compare that against your half hour test drive of a new one.

If you want an accurate try before you buy experience, that's what I'd recommend.

Definitely agree. Look on Turo. I see Taco's on there all the time for a very reasonable price.

Thanks for the Turo suggestion. I had to look up ECM meaning and that's a great point. It'll behave differently than brand new so I'm sold on Turo.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
Rental at dealer was also overpriced last time i looked into it. Been a few years but i doubt they changed that

Oh there will be some mods all right
I agree with driving one with some miles under it's belt. A brand new truck with 20 mi on it drives quite different versus a truck with 20,000 mi. It seems to me that Tacomas (and Toyotas in general) tend to lack power until the engines break in and then they start to feel better. I test drove a brand new 16 when they came out, didn't like it at all. Also drove a brand new 2020, didn't like that either. Fast forward a couple years and I drove a 2020 with 20,000 miles on it and it felt so much better than the brand new one did a couple years back.
