Ok, so now we have two push-button start vehicles in the garage:

The wife's 2014 RAV4 and my 2023 Tacoma SR5. Both are push-button start so both use a fob.

Right now it seems my life would be a lot easier if both vehicles were programmed the same so either set of fobs would start either vehicle. It'd save me a lot of effort chasing down the different fob when I'm outside.

Is it possible or am I totally nuts???????????

    Pros and cons, please!

    Form follows function
Your keys are mated to the car’s ECU. So even if both vehicles had the same key fob part number, a Toyota key can only be mated to one vehicle at a time. Now, you could look into flipper zero or some other key fob sim hardware/software but then you’d start going down a rabbit hole of sus internet searches. :spy:

I wonder if there is an aftermarket key fob with two or more chips that can be programmed for that exact use? I can think of several reasons this would be handy.

Yes if you go aftermarket you can use one key fob to control both cars. I know Viper can do this.

So your in the garage and you want to warm up the Toyota. Do you just grab the nearest fob and hope? If it weren’t a push to start you’ll need the correct key, just color-code them and drive on.

If you could start 2 vehicles with a fob then car thieves could start 5 cars at a time to drive away. just saying

Dumped the Tacoma, that's all it needed.
I have three Harleys in the garage. All have security, so they each have a fob.

broke out my snap on scanner and started programming key fobs in ECU’s.

    2014, 2015, and 2018.

none of them used the same fob, even though they looked identical on the outside.

your Rav4 and tacom could be the same way. Or, it could work.

The fobs unique code is stored by the ECU of the vehicle. The fob isn’t programmed to a vehicle. But if you have remote hatch access on the Rav4, I’m guessing that your fob won’t be compatible with the Tacoma.
    Could be wrong.

head to the dealership with a Rav4 fob and ask them to add it to the Tacoma. See what they say.

The key fob is a one way device that sends a signal to the vehicle. The vehicle looks for the signal that the fob emits. The vehicle is programmed to the fob and if you lose it, the vehicle can easily programmed to a new fob. So yes, it is possible to program a single fob to multiple vehicles.

With that said, you now have a single fob controlling 2 vehicles, you want to unlock the Tacoma.... you now unlock both instead. So now do you leave the Rav4 unlocked or have to manually lock it, because if you lock it with the fob you now lock both. Sounds like more work.

This is based on factory keyless entry.

There are aftermarket alarm/keyless entry systems that can control multiple vehicles by switching frequencies for each vehicle. This requires the aftermarket system in each vehicle with an aftermarket fob.

Thanks to everyone for their input. The next time I'm at a dealer (at the 5,000 mile Toyotacare appointment) I'll ask and report back.

    They wont do it.

It wouldn't work anyway, you have to do an immobilizer reset on used keys, which would wipe the smart key from the other vehicle. You cannot program programmed keys to vehicles without erasing them.

I heard somewhere that newer models are coming with model specific fobs and have Model ID in addition to other IDs, which make them only work on that model.

I know a guy who kept the keys to his 2 vehicles on the same keychain so he always had the right key with him
