Hey guys, I just bought a 1996 Tacoma LX cause I always wanted one ever since I was a kid. It needs some work on it but I’m willing to put the time and effort into it.

    Welcome.

I hope I am not the bearer of bad news, but you better check the rear frame at the leaf spring perches. That body line offset where the front of the bed meets the body should not be offset that much.

At a minimum, the springs may be very weak.

Even scarier is that he has an ‘83 but the odometer broke a couple decades ago.

There is a problem here with the bed and body alignment.

Where has this truck lived? If salt country, hopefully you did a full frame inspection.

But that's not right, even for a southern truck.

Hopefully it's not too complex to clear up.

I believe West Virginia, I did look, its alright on rust. what I mean by that is everywhere looks alright but I did find two worry some spots. One of those spots I believe (sorry super new to this) is a gas tank cross member. The other spot that is worrysome is this one spot between center frame left and mid frame. picture for reference.

is there any specific spots I should be worried about? Right now im not driving it at all. Its my project truck and I want to make sure everything is perfect with it before I start driving with it

The most common problem spots are at the front of the rear leaf springs where they attach to the frame. Also, the upper area of the rear shock mounts, especially the passenger side.

I believe those are fine, I will double check when im back from working out of town. from what I remember they seemed super solid but wouldnt hurt to inspect it once more. and the springs too, I have a list going. thank you so much for the insight

    Ask me how I know...

Here's what my 1st 95 looked like after the rust was removed:
