You want a car that's an absolute nightmare of a machine to keep on the road that's the one. Every one of them for sale is for sale because it has a ton of problems and not worth fixing anymore. Although I have to agree the e63 wagon is the absolute best looking and driving car Mercedes ever produced.

@Ozark_RegCab by the way, if you look at @Das it mang posts dealing with a recently purchased T100 he's done far more work on his own (both repair/replace) as well as diagnosing and is far from the "giving up stage" like you've hit many times

Plus he can barely walk/drive after a really bad accident recently

The big difference being that he knew buying into a +20 year old vehicle he'd need to fix stuff on his own versus calling it broken, a defect, or worse

The older E classes with the 5.0 or 5.5 are supposed to be bulletproof except for timing chains in some years. Those are classy.

    Stock again- rip slug
I always ran the slug low as i could, as to "eat up" any older fuel at the bottom. Thought of it as a preventative for chunkies and issues later.

The only ones I'd consider are the diesels like the W123 and 1.9 TDI. Those seem to be an exception to the rule of German cars being moneypits.

You know, a great car for him to learn to wrench on (including replacing the timing belt as his first big project) would be a VG30E from a Z31

But it'd have to be one without the built-in audio reminders so he'd have less electrical stuff to deal with

I've fixed a fair amount of stuff, but it's still a little rough around the edges for commuting with all the NVH.

Oh God can you imagine him trouble shorting that fuel and ignition system though, already went through that once with Tyler, I can't do it again. The engine is mechanically dead simple though which is nice.

NVH pales in comparison to anything newer for two reasons

    1. it's an old truck

    2. it's a truck to begin with, nvh was less of a concern whereas today many trucks are spruced up as well as cars are for daily driving

To be fair, I don't recall any work you've done to your Taco

I've heard the subframe has to come out to replace the clutch or something crazy like that tho.

They're still old and things need attention. "Bulletproof," doesn't mean headache free.

When I first got it, it was barely drivable: sputtering starts and wouldn't go into gear.

I did chase ignition system issues on one of mine, forgot about that

But engine-wise yeah it's stupid simple which would be perfect for him to learn on

Would genuinely up his confidence if it was on a stand for him to work on following a Z world tutorial

Buy a box of Kilmat on Amazon and apply it to everywhere you can reach inside the doors, ex cab pockets under the window, and firewall/cab floor. Without stripping the cab you can get a decent amount of noise reduction by doing that

Also we should trade trucks for a couple days sometimes, maybe you need some perspective of how much worse it could be :p

Can't leave well enough alone so I cut the fronts too.

    PXL_20230805_181758087.jpg

Hoping this holds me over a few more trips... have some IFS hub parts to make the front axle 3" wider so I can install the new wheels/tires but I still need to turn the hubs down so I can fit a Taco rotor over them
