I did a 4x4 swap on my 2004 prerunner a while ago and I’m having issues with the speedometer. The transfer case is a j-shift out of a 2000 4 runner. I removed the vss cover in the tc and installed the following parts:

    8318113020 - speedometer sensor
    3340339365 - gear sub assy

extended the plug but my speedo still isn’t working. I looked inside the tc to make sure a gear was on the output shaft prior to installing the sensor. Everything looked good. Any ideas?
    Thanks

Quite possible your pin outs are different only way to know is look at the schematics of both vehicles.

Could be, I was by myself so the next time I have a buddy I’ll remove the sensor and spin the gear to see if the Speedo reacts. That will tell me if it’s an electrical or mechanical issue.

IIRC, you have to change the worm gear on the 4R with a the larger OD from a tacoma and place the tacoma steel detent ball with the worm gear. The 4R have a smaller worm gear and the detent ball, which lcok and allows the worm gear to spin is not used in the 4R.

    Two things -

    1. Re-check your wiring where you spliced in your extension for the VSS. It may have become loose.

    2. This is the more likely cause, pull the VSS and carefully re-insert it. Sometimes those splines don't always line up.

Good info, wasn't aware of a difference between the taco and the 4Runner. Would definitely be the cause of the disconnect.

EDIT: After searching, it's all coming back lol.

As for swapping them in, you should only have to remove the transfer extension housing sub-assembly. You'll also need some fresh Toyota Orange FIPG (08826−00090) handy as well.

When reassembling, the 5 bolts should be 9ft lbs. Apply liquid sealer to the bolts. Sealant: Part No.08833−00080, THREE BOND 1344, LOCTITE 242 or equivalent.
