@hiPSI After seeing the hyd fluid and front axle oil, I'm thinking I should do the diffs and transfer case on the taco. Any recommendations for transfer case oil?

Here's the OEM on Amazon :eek::eek:

Glad to see they have payment plans!

The 3ed gen transfer case specification is for the 75W single grade transfer gear oil.
The use of 75W-90 has been hotly debated on the forum.

There are two obvious takeaways here:
    1) Toyota did specify that oil, seeing as they have the engineers one can assume it was for a particular reason -- a reason that nobody here has gotten a direct answer from Toyota.
There is however a lot of "...well, I always..."

    2) You are also free to use whatever product you please.

If you do some shopping you can get the OEM oil for way less than the AMZ price, usually around $65. The transfer case service will use exactly the 1 liter can.

Yeah, I noted the difference in the spec, hence my question. I realize Amazon pricing is sometimes out to lunch, and I surely hope I can find it for less than $225 for a litre, but even half that is shocking. With all the transfer cases in the world, there's gotta be a reasonable alternative. :notsure:

Alright. I am going to give my opinion, as an engineer.
But before I do, let me put it in perspective, and I will use real life applications I have been part of.

I defer to the engineers that designed a street sweeper.
I defer to the engineers who designed the mining truck.
I defer to the engineers who designed the concrete transit mixer.
I defer to the engineers who designed the hard rock drill.
I defer to the engineers who designed the feed mixer.
I defer to the engineers who designed the lagoon pump.
    And dozens of others.
While they are all different machines, they all use the same hydraulic components, and they all have different duty cycles and users, hence they all have different specs, that fall within our range of specifications.

Now, I know, I don't think, I know, that Toyota engineers know more than me about mid size pickup truck applications, so I defer to their specifications and follow them.
I could guess that I can replace their specs with one that I think is adequate, but I truly don't know, so I use their recommendations. It might cost more, but truly, they know more than me.

For those that think it is a conspiracy to make more money, you can think what you want. I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, engineers want their shit to last. We all do.

My dealer just uses 75w90 in the 3rd gen TC's, so there's that to add into the confusion... o_O

No confusion really….simply put, either is perfectly fine. The dealers aren’t interested in adding 75W to their collection. Hopefully that doesn’t start a massive t-case oil debate in the shop time thread lol.

And true. I asked mine about buying a can… they said we just get big barrels and use the same in everything. Yea, that’s why I stopped going after my two oil changes. I buy parts there… sometimes. Good experiences, my service advisor knew his shit, but I’m just not trusting the monkeys. The major mechanics… maybe. I know most places have a crew of greasers and then the real guys, that went to Toyota school.

    The voice of reason.

The conspiracy "to make more money" is the most ridiculous thing I read here. o_O

Seriously, the majority of transfer cases (outside of this and similar forums) probably aren't ever serviced when the first owner has the vehicle, some are serviced incorrectly with 75W-90 from the dealer. :frusty:

If Toyota was out to make more money they would be much further ahead to just add $1 to the cost of every set of brake pads than to specify a product shipped from Japan in a metal can.

Dealership service departments are lambasted here almost weekly for messing up routine service items like:

    Over tightening the oil filter
    Stripping the skid plate bolts
Over tightening the lug nuts during tire rotation
    Failing to rotate the tires
    Over inflating the tires
    And on...
    and on..
    and on.
Why should a transfer case service be any different. :annoyed:

Thanks everyone, I looked a bit more and found some for a measly $155 a litre here in the frozen north.

    Good morning everyone :hattip:

FYI- phase 1 of my postable project was completed on Sunday. I took pics  and will post when the project is done.

Another rough night with the pup. We thought it was the end but she turned it around. Back to baseline (which isn’t great but she seems comfortable). At some point we’ll have to make the call but not today
