I'm picking up a new Tacoma before they stop making the 6 cylinders. I will travel across the nation to get the one I want and then drive it back home, about 2500 miles. I've heard that many people like to perform an oil change at 1000 miles. I'd be in Cheyenne WY at that point. Anybody knows a very reputable place around there to perform the oil change? Or should I just drive home and do it myself at 2500. Opinions?

You can change the oil early if you want or just change it at the factory specified interval and be fine as well. Stop at any Toyota dealer along the way and get it done if you want to.

Just drive it home and do it yourself.

Lot's of strong opinions on this subject. Do what you are comfortable with. I was comfortable with 1200 miles.

I only had to drive 300 mi to go pick up a v6. For 1k oil change I asked for a 5k service so they would look over the other fluids, can't hurt (hopefully).

If you are considering a 1k oil change be sure to consider the 10yr/125k mi Toyota platinum warranty from Kansas for $1795

I'd be honest, every single new car I've ever bought, I've always done the oil change at the factory recommended interval. I don't know anyone that had engine problems from a brand new vehicle bc they didn't change their oil in the first 500-1000 miles of ownership. This isn't a race motor or an old school big block. But what do I know, I just sell wheels for a living o_O.

Personally, I think you'll be fine driving it back home and getting it done there.

A vehicle with a regular oil filter yeah, but the complication they used for this model, no way

I guess I could theoretically do the oil change only and leave the old filter, but it's not worth it as we.have determined.

It’s not anymore difficult to change the filter in a third gen compared to any other vehicles.

Wait, I thought the Tacoma had a filter that requires to go under the engine in order to swap it. Am I learning it's on top of the engine, easily accessible just by popping the hood? Good news thanks!

No, it’s underneath like most engines. You have to go down there to drain the oil anyway so it’s not a big deal. And it’s a truck so you don’t need jacks to fit under to work unless you’re a fat dude.

Quickest break-in period ever. I suppose your trek will put it through the wringer for a proper multi load break-in. Personally, I’d just drive it home and get the oil changed then if you’re determined on getting a pre 10k oil change.

I bought the $60 set of tools that includes the special wrench for the filter housing and the EZ-mode pre-drain hose attachment thing: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0791MWXDC

I took it to a pay-to-use lift around 1000 miles and did it myself and sent a sample to Blackstone. I'll be doing it again at 5k with another sample. I was told by a random Toyota parts guy that it has 'break-in oil', but didn't believe him because 10k is too long for that sort of thing in my mind. Blackstone said the viscosity of the oil in the truck was 5w-20, which differs from the 0w-20 they recommend, so maybe he was right?

Either way, there are members on this forum with 200-300k who have mentioned changing oil at 1k, and it seemed like it couldn't hurt to do.

I was thinking to go with 30 weight oil; usage of 20 weight is only because back in the day Obama mandated better gas mileage, the side effect of course is less longevity of the engine

there are multiple members of this forum pushing 300k that have only ever used the Toyota 0w-20 this motor is specced for. I don't think anyone has seen any extended life by going off-book with oil weight but its your truck.

the oil they put in at the factory isn't just oil. it has additives like zinc and other compounds that are meant to help in the break in period. don't change your oil early.
