Oy! You are completely missing the point! Most people can scrounge up a few grand to get their car fixed if they really have to. But a tree slices through your house! Most folks cannot absorb that without experiencing pretty severe hardship. Hence the rule of insuring, insure for the big stuff!

    It’s a Philosophical comparison.

Sure you can’t compare $ of your house burning down vs your truck turning into a bonfire on the interstate. But a tree falls on your back deck or takes your picture window out vs your transmission blowing. Which sucks more and cost more. Insurance can help with either. And I pay as much for home owners insurance in one year as I did for an extra 3yrs/85kmi. So the cost is pro rated accordingly to be about the same. How much do you think you pay for home owners over the life of a 30 yr mortgage if you wanna talk expensive? About the cost of a new Taco! Lol

You made the point for the warranty in your statement, most people don't have savings for a blown engine or tranny. I think people need both, I agree. I have friends in NH that role the dice without car insurance. I tell them there idiots. All it takes is another NH person to total your car then for wasting money in court chasing a person with no money. I agree the house scenario is a stretch but that starts the conversation.

OK, we are kind of on the same page, I think? The next variable in the inure or not insure equation is risk or in this case better called probability. How probable is it that you will experience an engine or tranny failure? Probably pretty low. So low that you can almost say it won't happen to you and almost be right. But if it does happen to you, I get the fear. That could be one scary fucking repair bill!

The extending warranty companies know the risk down to the gnats ass, which is why they push these plans so hard. They will make money as the house almost always wins. It's a gamble either way for the truck owner, but personally I'll take my chances.

Do what ever helps you sleep well at night.

    Carry on!

As they say in Vegas, “the house always wins”. With that said, do I buy extended warranties? Sometimes, have they paid off? Sometimes.

Every toyota I've owned except one always went over 10 years with a major issue, and the one that did was an engine failure within 3 years, so it was under warranty anyways. This being my first tacoma, hopefully things go the same.
