So I just spoke to the toyota parts guy here - he will order another one in for me - Here in Canada - there parts listing only shows it working to the 2015 version.. he seemed really unsure - so I guess I will wait and see :)
Thanks for all your feedback - I will update once i get the new part...

parts listings here in the States also say they will only fit up to a 2015. The reality is the inside of the beds are identical. They fit the third gens just fine

On a related note, can I ask about the rectangular tube above the front cleat rail? This conversation helped me to understand what the 2 threaded holes are for, but any reason that I shouldn't remove it? I'm planning a semi permanent camper and I could buy an inch of length and save a few lbs without this piece.

I have no idea what it is or what it's for but I have the same question as you. And what are those two holes for?

Haha all good. Others use those threaded holes for other things too. Mounts for accessories, bikes or whatever else you can think of.

Yes, I learned that the holes are for the factory tonneau on page 1.
I still wonder if the beam with the holes serves a structural purpose with a slide in style camper installed.

It adds some structural rigidity to the front of the bed. What is to be gained by removing it?

No and not sure why you'd want one there. It'd be in the way every time you're loading and unloading cargo

It would be convenient for securing my cargo net once loaded.

Hmm. Why not wrap the net around your cargo and secure it to the D rings?

I have used the D rings many times. But when the bed is really full and I can’t put down the tailgate because things would fall out it’s a major pain to get my hand down to the d rings to attach.

    Understood.

A: connect net, drape over tailgate, then load, then fasten at the front

B: bed stiffeners would also give you more anchor points higher up.

Just two cents for two thoughts since I did method A until I got bed stiffeners and now I use method B :D
