I’m assuming the steering rack leak is the usual tie rod boots being wet on the bottom. Every 4Runner/Tacoma etc I’ve driven has ended up like that around 100k and there is hardly ever any significant loss of fluid. More a seap than anything else. Something just to keep an eye on, not waste money on a new rack.

I would have the dealer do the timing cover because they will warranty the work and have everything else done at an indy shop.

dealers have always been known as scam artists. instead of trying to be honest people they want all in on the scamming.

Timng cover would have been covered under the 10 year 100k Toyota extended warranty.

Of course they “found it” only when they’re sure you’re out of warranty. They never mentioned it to you before. Super sneaky on their part. Leak from steering rack might just be from timing cover leak . I might be wrong though .

The OEM ball joints on my 2nd gen were still good at 135k. They had been weeping since 60k lol but never ever developed any play.

How long do you plan on keeping your 2017, might factor in to how much maintenance you want done. As my Toyota vehicles approached high mileage I would check suspension parts for safety (and fluid levels too). When I see a small stain on my garage floor, I just lay some cardboard underneath. That being said, I know not everyone is like me and might want every bit of wetness addressed.

A platinum warranty would have covered alot of these items and the big ticket timing cover gasket, search around and a 6 yr / 125k mile warranty would have run you only $1400 or so through a few wholesalers here. Worth every penny.

Do the work yourself. Or go line by line on the quote to make sure they are not quoting labor per line item - you want labor in the aggregate. Ex: you don't need .5 hours on each job for labor relating to get the vehicle on the rack and the tires taken off. They only need to get it on the rack once so you should only be charged the time to get it on the rack once. I have seen shops that charge a single vehicle with 6 different repairs like they were six different customers coming in for an individual job.

Also: what was leaking that killed the fan clutch? Post pics of all of the problem areas and post them homes.

90% of that list is EASY DIY stuff. Even if you're new at turning wrenches. (And that's assuming you actually NEED all of it done)

He has 2017 it is likely outside of that "platinum" job time frame anyways.

Much of those costs are rather excessive. Just a few years ago I bought a genuine toyota steering rack, and new lines for my tundra that were about $900 total. I performed the work myself. I can't believe its that much labor to change a rack.

In 3rd gen tacos with the v6 in the way, removing the rack is kind of a time consuming PITA
