Thought I would get some feedback from some hikers...I currently own these Oakley Tactical Type of Boots: http://www.oakley.com/products/sabot-mid/11117-001 I mostly use them for camping/Riding my Motorcycle/going Off Roading etc...I am plan on starting to do more day hiking and eventually backpacking...Would these suffice for that type of activity? They are light and very comfortable...didn't know if they could handle the abuse of tough terrain as opposed to something like this (random pick from REI) http://www.rei.com/product/796769

    Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Front (2.75" total): 1.6" Eibach coils, Toytec 0.5" (L) & 0.25" (R) top plate spacers, 5100's @ 0.85", Built Right uniball UCA's, Differential drop, Removed sway bar Rear: TSB springs, Wheeler's 1.5" AAL, 5100's, 2* shims, Carrier bearing drop, F and R Spidertrax, 285/75-16 Goodyear Duratracs, Self-fabbed sliders, rear bumper, and skid plates, Cobra 75 CB, Bed lined slim lo-pro tool box, Bed Extender, Diff breather mod, Two tail gate security mods, Exhaust dumped behind axle, Can't leave shit alone so plenty more coming...
It depends. If you're not doing much, what you have now is fine. If you're going for long trips with heavy packs, you'll need to step it up. Waterproof or highly breathable? Light and fast or stout?

Whatever the case, poor fit can be ok for a while, but 10 nmiles down the trail, you'll be in extreme pain.

Go to a hiking store and be professionally fitted. REI has been hit and miss for me. Don't necessarily feel compelled to pay more or less. Get the ones that fit the best. Asolo fits my foot well but doesn't necessarily work for you. Some brands are kind of known to be wider, narrower, high volume, low volume, etc. And a good fit/sales person will know which is which.

I have a pair of Vasque high tops and they are light and waterprrof. They run a little big on me but they are still super comfy. I need the hightops for ankle support. They are almost like spring and fall boots but I use them year round. My brother wears the exact same pair for work so he is in them for 11 hours a day and loves them. I found the best prices and even better then the internet at Campmor if you have one around you. I would buy them again and my brother is on his 2nd or 3 rd pair. just my .02

I am not planning on any real hardcore hiking...I have been on some light desert hikes with my oakleys and they rocked..super light and excellent ankle support...didn't know if they would suffice for anything more than that...I will do some shopping and see I can find.

x2 on the lowa's iv had a pair of lowa rangers for 3ish years now. Countless hikes, backpacking weekend, wheeling trips and i wear them 5 day's a week at work. The soles only lasted a year, but a pair of green superfeet and their the best boots iv ever owned. Im almost at half tread now. The only problem is the price has gone up by almost $100:eek:

I don't think the oakleys would be great for backpacking they look to light. How much support do they have?

Love my vasques. Fit perfectly and suit hiking and light mountaineering needs very well. I have worn these in -15 degree temps to 95 degree temps in comfort. Gore Tex is also a nice addition. I'm not quite sure what model mine are but they are all leather with vibram soles.

+1 on Vasque- I am an Arizona Trail steward and should check out some of the hiking Trails in Az.

    www.aztrail.org

I hike on average 50-100 miles per year. The shoes are one of the most important pieces of gear. Arizona has such varied terrain, desert, rocks, major inclines and decline all the way up to alpine environment. Then throw in cactus and some of the sharpest plants on the planet and you need more than 1 pair of shoes.

Go to REI and try on many pairs, take like a solid hour of your time and wear different pairs. You will eventually find the right ones. You get what you pay for also.
