Hey there, I have a 98 taco with the manual transmission currently sitting at 248k miles. A month or so ago my clutch pedal was completely stuck to the floor and and was totally useless; mechanic diagnosed it as the clutch pedal assembly itself needing to be replaced as both the slave cylinder and master cylinder had been replaced within the last 1 or 2 years and the clutch itself was replaced at 184k miles (roughly 60k miles on it). After replacing the pedal assembly, truck drove good for a couple days before the issue started to arise intermittently; the pedal would stick **sometimes** but I would be able to return the pedal with my foot and continue driving. Truck taken back to the mechanic, pedal removed and returned and a new one was ordered from another shop; low and behold, the issue is back again. I went to pull out onto a 55mph road after driving the truck most of the day without issue and as I was going from 1st to 2nd gear the pedal was stuck to the floor board. After returning the pedal with my foot I was able to drive all the way home with no issue:confused::confused:. I have since dropped the truck back off with my mechanic, he is thinking to install a bigger spring but I am looking for any suggestions. Thanks, sorry for the wall of text.

I had the same issue. Had to drive from long beach to the bay area without a functioning clutch pedal with no pressure. Used my flip flop under the pedal and tried not to stop at any point. got back and changed the clutch assembly, master and slave cylinder. All OEM. Still same issue.

Ended up getting a whole new clutch kit from Marlin. That fixed the issue.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
if the big clunky clutch return spring has not been replaced they have a issue of the bushings wearing out and you have metal on metal causing the spring to hang up.

A linear brake pedal return spring is the most common fix.

As long as the pedal not returning is the only problem and the clutch works as it should other wise.

☝️Very true - guess I had two issues not just one.

God I hope I don't need a whole new clutch kit lol. Only 60k(ish) miles on the current clutch. When I returned the last pedal the seller did message saying that they noticed the bushings were worn and apologized.

I can almost guarantee, as @Bivouac said, it’s your return spring. It's a goofy coil spring setup. The plastic bushings on it wear out, and then the slot in the clutch pedal that it rides in wears deeper. Most people just pop the coil spring out and replace it with a brake pedal return spring. It’s a linear spring, and the points to connect it to are already there because the 4-cylinder models use a linear spring. Here is a thread about it https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/clutch-pedal-truffle-shuffle.499079/ It’s sad to see so many people throwing lots of money at something they can fix with a $10 spring. I know I did.

Totally forgot about this gem - this was what led me to the promised land:
    https://youtu.be/Y22pmMqHULw

Explained the part where the wear on the groove in the pedal arm causes the pedal to stick.

Got the call from my mechanic yesterday and I've just been drowning my sorrows since and forgot to update lol. He says it's the clutch pressure plate plate; I am not sure what about it specifically but it appears I need another clutch job after 60k miles :mad: I am getting a refund on the work that was done replacing the clutch pedal; not that it helps much considering the price of service for a clutch. Absolutely bewildered what burnt my clutch out so fast. I will show him some of the suggestions when I go in to the shop on Monday for further explanation on what's wrong with my pressure plate

Being he missed the problem the first time.:anonymous:

Sure sounds strange your mechanic is so good he can tell the clutch plate has failed without seeing it.

I hope your not being taken for a ride.

Unless your describing of the symptoms was really not even close.

For a few dollars I would have changed the spring first.

The trouble with paying labor to work on there Trucks . It gets expensive real fast.:annoyed:
