I think manufactures like toyota want to keep selling their customers new trucks every ten years, or sooner. I don't think they'd sell as many, if they used galvanized frames, unless they made up the difference by adding another $15k to the price of every new truck. With the rust inhibitor coatings I've done on my toyota pickups in the past, I don't think toyota is getting rich on me when I buy a new truck every 20 years.

It depends what type of undercoating is being used. Those hard rubberize ones are not good. Imo, cosmoline is very good, plus it doesn't get wash away very easy like all those lanolin types. If you live in the rust belt as I do, I'm not into having a lanolin rust inhibitor reapplied every year.

As a municipal plow driver, I approve this message. Plus studies have shown that sand is worse for the environment.

Thanks. Yes after doing a bit of a rabbit hole - I'm seeing lanolin is recommended by a lot of folks. Undercoating can trap moisture? So maybe just wire brush all the rust and use fluid film?

fluid film is highly recommended but it wears off and you have to reapply it a lot. this stuff is pretty permanent and what i used. it's pretty nasty to deal with though.

It worked well for my rusty trailer here on Maui"s salty north shore.
