At what towing weight does one need a trailer brake? Over 3k lbs?

Nothing wrong asking about trailer towing safely. I'm waiting for the guy to respond, "Nah, you don't need it!"

How much weight are you pulling and over what kind of terrain?

Just normal highway cruising. I haven't towed anything with my Tacoma yet, but i recall with my old man's 4Runner we had a trailer with 2 motorcycles and no trailer brake. Another time we towed a 4 bike trailer (2 axles) and it did have trailer brake. I'm guessing the 2 bike trailer (with touring motorcycles) was around 2500lbs total; while the 4 bike trailer was closer to 5000lbs total.

If you don't have it (Brake Controller) you can't use it. If you're handy and can get under your dash easy enough, you can probably install it yourself. Lot's of guys use the RedArc
brake controller. It fits into one of the slots on your dashboard. Several examples are posted on TW.

I have the redarc and am very happy with it. Easy and effective.

Redarc for three years and lots of towing. Can’t beat it.
