Question for you guys/gals. I bought a new 23 trd sport, I’m at 8400kms. My dealership said if I take it to them for every service it would be free oil changes. I booked my truck in for today, when they looked at it they told me they don’t do oil changes until 16,000 kms even on the first one. Then informed me that every oil change they do an inspection which is $120 Canadian every time. It will cost me half of that doing it myself with amsoil…
How many kms do you guys usually go between oil changes especially on your first oil change?
Definitely going to be doing oil changes myself and definitely be doing one at 8400kms especially for the first one.

Dumped the Tacoma, that's all it needed.
I have the dealership change it at 5K mile intervals and pay for it.

Same thing happened to me...They advertise free oil changes for 2 years and I have Toyocare on top of that which adds 2 more years I think....But they only do the free oil change at 10,000 mile intervals. I do my own in between.

What does the manual say. Generally on oil changes there is a mileage and/or time (e.g., 1 year) interval.

I change at it before 5K miles
I haven’t done any of the “free oil changes” that the dealer offers. I do my own work and meticulously document

You’d have to pay or do a 6mo/5k oil change yourself.

Maybe I’ve drank the TW koolaid for too long but I won’t let the dealer touch my truck ever if I can help it, especially the free toyotacare. It would probably stress me out knowing they are in there going to town with air tools — too many stories of over-torqued bolts or forgetting to replace the oil filter entirely…

I do mine at 10k miles, or close which works out to be yearly. Use a good synthetic and filter, you'll never have a problem. I've had our 2012 prius done the same way. Unless your in a severe use category, your just wasting time, and resources.

A topic of heated debate if you have a few hours to spare LOL I'm a 3-5K guy, in combination with when the clear brown starts to get a little dark. Lately been doing mostly light daily driver/to and from work so 5K for me.

Not sure of the configuration of later gens, but I recently changed out a lot of suspension parts and you should be very sure none of the oil gets back on the steering rack bushings when changing oil especially if they're still stock. Engine oil will cause them to deteriorate.

Every 5k, especially the first 5k.

Previous personal experiences include a loose drain plug & messed up clutch following routine dealer services, so count me in the check their work closely category. I don’t necessarily check whether they actually use the expensive synthetic they charge me for, or just throw in “something oily”, so, I go with 5k intervals to be safe.

I’m a low mileage guy so every 6 months. My local dealership said I can use up my 2 Toyota Care changes whenever I want. So instead of the recommended 1yr and 2yr I am doing it at 6mos and 1yr. Then I’ll do it myself.

That's how it worked at my dealership. It was 2 changes per year for 2 years no matter when you did them. I did at 6 months which was well below 10,000.

Service #1's are a bit of a rip off, especially if you can do your own tire rotation. No oil change, no point in going to the dealer.

Just do service #2's around 8-10,000kms if you must go to the dealer. Oil change, rotation and short inspection.

Service #3 is a 300$+ oil change and tire rotation with inspection. Crazy price.

The other maintenance items later on like differential oil change or spark plug change are even more expensive at the dealer. Either DIY, or go to a trusted indie shop if you don't have the time or skillset. Ask in your regional subforum for a trusted indie shop if you don't know one.
The Canadian maintenance booklet no longer has maintenance intervals. You have to go on Toyota's web site, click through the owners section and enter your mileage, etc. The US maintenance booklet says 10,000mi/12mo. for normal usage, or 5000mi/6mo. if majority of driving is under "special operating conditions" (off-road, towing, short trip, taxi, or door-to-door delivery usage).
