TLDR cliff notes - new to overlanding and my Tacoma, I am wanting eval of my build plans.

Ok so I am new to the whole overlanding and offloading world. I bought my Tacoma a few months ago with the goals of doing overlanding trips with my family (wife, 5.5, and 7 year old boys). I want to be able to go deep into the wilderness and camp and explore. I am less interested in the wheeling part and more the exploring part. I live in Kentucky right outside of Cincinnati so most of the trips will likely be on the Eastern half of the US, but I do plan to make trips out West at some point. Some of these trips will be solo. We will be ground camping, I do photography and love sunrise so having to pack a roof tent up to drive somewhere in the morning is not an option. I have spent a lot of time reading and learning over the last 6 months or so but I want to run my build ideas by this group to get some feedback. I am not trying to gloat or anything but I am not a 20 year old kid that can’t afford to do anything. I have the money to do it all, but I am a practical person so I will do what is needed and not just throw money at this project just because. This is not a daily driver either but I will be using it as a truck as well around town some….kids bikes, trips to Home Depot etc when needed so I need a little flexibility. One thing I do know is I don’t want a cap. What I need is to be able to carry camping gear and get where we want to go. Seriously I am looking for good feedback and suggestions. I am a noob at this but not a noob to cars in general. What am I missing? What is overkill or not good enough? How will this setup perform?

Here is how the truck currently sits:

    ’23 TRD PRO 6MT

    Stock wheels and tires

    RCI 20 deg sliders

    URD short shifter

14” Voodoo Max Modular rack with tonneau brackets - this will be stored when not using.

    Maxtrax traction boards

Here are my current build thoughts:

Lomax tri fold tonneau - gives me the dry space and security for camping and trips but removable for other truck duties such as bikes and such. Yes I know I would have to remove the rack to open it.

SSO Slimline tube bumper with Warn 10k winch - no light cutout

RCI aluminum trans and transfer case skids

    AAL

255/85/16 pizza cutters - not sure on this yet or going 285’s for tire selection. Would like to try and maintain some gas milage. Maybe Wildpeaks if I go 285’s - 255’s are very limited in selection. Yes 33’s fit under the ’23 Pro without a lift I have read a ton about that.

On board air - need some suggestions here - I know the ARB twin is the cool one to have but I have seen some other practical options as well.

    Ditch lights

Rack mounted awning - thinking 6’ or a 270 degree

Maybe a roof rack if I need the space - if I can avoid it for the noise, weight, and drag then I would like to.

Thinking mount spare tire up on the rack - either on top or under the rack suspended.

Pressurized water system - either home made or purchase

    GMRS radio

Recovery gear will be mounted to the rack as well (shovel, ax, traction boards), remainder will be in a case on top. Not sure what cases yet.

    What am I missing here?

    Camping

I need to expand this a lot - I have camped some but still a bit new to it.

Tent for myself, wife, and kids

    Air mattresses

    Chairs

5 lb tank mounted under the rack

    Water storage tank/jugs

    23” black stone

    Tailgate table/prep surface.

Was going to do coolers vs refrigerator but open to arguments against this. Would want it to fit under the tonneau I guess or I could mount it under the rack where it would be exposed.

    Hatchet

    Shovel

    Chain saw

    Power station?

    Lighting?

    What am I missing here?

How does this build plan sound for what I am looking to do?

Thank you for your time and knowledge!
