    Hey guys,

Could anyone help me out with what this piece is called? I got a really good deal on some shocks off a used Tacoma, and noticed that one shock has this piece and the other one doesn’t.

Is it something that I could use off my existing shock if needed? Any resources for where to buy new from? I would prefer to buy new parts because I don’t know how old my current shocks are.

    TIA!

Yes you need that. I’m literally replacing my old shocks right now lol. You’re welcome to my old part if you’d like. It’s a little crusty but still works fine. 2015, 145k miles on it. 99% on road miles.

Do you happen to know the name of this piece?

Nah, I don’t. You can contact bilstein and ask them though. It’s not a Toyota part; it’s part of the shock itself. I’m pretty sure the sole purpose of it is to keep the blue dust cover up

I wonder if the other shock has it too but it's just in the blue dust cover.

Oh yea good call. There’s a little like rubber band and a metal clip that holds it in place. I bet one of them broke and you’re right

have you checked inside the blue cover on the right? maybe its still stuck in there?

think that is just to hold up the blue dust sheilds.

As stated all thats there for is 1. proper spacer for the shock shaft, 2 to hold the plastic dust cover in place.

You could run without the dust covers just make sure to get a properly sized spacer.

If you currently have stock shocks on your truck, during replacement of those old ones you could grab that spacer out of it.

I was thinking of doing this too, but the shocks that are on there now are a different style that does not appear to have a dust cover. How essential is it to have one?

Thank you all for your thoughts and feedback! I did reach out to Bilstein and am waiting to hear back.

A question I posed to one of the responses, how essential is the dust cover for the shock? Just out of curiosity.

I have heard that the main function of the dust cover is to protect the shaft from getting sandblasted or pitted during severe off-road use. Little to no use otherwise. A lot of shocks don't come with dust covers.

I’d absolutely run them. My offer stands to send you my old ones. I’m going to toss my shocks tomorrow though so just let me know.
