Do I NEED the oil filter housing tool to do an oil change?

I would definitely wait for the correct tool.
However about the filter being really tight. My experience changing mine at 4,500 miles when new from the factory is that it wasn't terribly tight. Now after I allowed the dealership to change it at the 10,000 mile service and I went to do it myself at 15,000 that is different. The dealership made I so tight I needed a 24" breaker bar to get it off.

 

He's talking about these cheapie aluminum ones cracking/splitting if you use just a 3/8 ratchet in the center instead of 24mm socket around it. It's happened to me before

 

Op needs to have some patience, and get the

$30 motivx mx2320 motivx tools oil filter wrench for toyota camry, tundra, tacoma, 4runner, RAV4 and more - 64mm 14 flute precision CNC machined aluminum oil filter removal tool

motivx mx2320 oil wrench, and have a ratchet with a 15/16'' socket on hand. It's worth its weight in oil. Imo, if only at 3k miles, you have a long way to go before changing, so no need to get antsy.

 

What others said. Why “certified mechanic” don’t have the right tools for his chit. Looks like his shop is at his house, hiding.

 

He got the filter cap off without damaging anything But yeah if you don't have the tactile skill to loosen the filter cap with a pry bar (I know I don't ), use the appropriate tool.

 

Wait for the tool. And replace that cheap plastic with a proper aluminum housing. It reuses the filter drain cap from the cheapie, btw.

I replaced filter housing on both RAV and Taco with this.

 

Don't need to tell me that. Tell that to the maker of the video. He is probably in TW on those "plastic sucks" threads.

Yes, you need the housing attachment. I just changed my oil and I needed a breaker (19mm box end wrench) over the socket driver to get the housing off and that was with the motivx tool.

Actually I was told by a rep at motivx when asking that why this new tool varies from their old one...I was told they have many professional auto techs that use their motivx tool, but complained to them the old tool was cracking oil housings, due it grabbing the housing's ears. Their new redesigned tool eliminates this, plus the tighter flutes on the new tool fit the housing much tighter.
I cringed when this so called certified master tech in the video used a pair channel lock pliers to remove the oil filter housing. No wonder he recommends getting a metal one.

 

get the MotivX oil change kit for the tacoma's. get the filter wrench, housing drain fitting, and hose (waaaay better than the plastic thing in the filters), and the fill funnel. I like the funnel because it threads on to the oil fill tube, and has a seal to prevent leaks. this will make your life waaaay easier. Ski

 

As 1,000 others have said, wait for the tool. IF you are that worried about doing your first change NOW, you can do an oil only change for some OCD peace of mind. Beats the pants off of trying to go at it with a pipe wrench and ending up with a truck you cant drive for 2 weeks.

 

Guess I got lucky. On my 2021 they never over-tightened the housing.

Now, my 2022 the dealer will not touch it besides recalls or break downs under warranty, so if it's on there too tight all I have is myself to blame
