Really salty here now but to me looks like a decent product. Yes, receiver mounted recovery will work and work well. People very rarely need a difficult recovery where multiple points are needed. I have , but only once. It was nice to have.

What appeals to me is that they are always there, and a little more rearward protection to plastic rear bumpers. A step is nice too. For these purposes it looks like it will do thr job well. You can probably gently tap a concrete wall or other vehicle bumper without scratching or damaging your plastic rear bumpers. Painted plastic bumpers are very easily damaged.

As for a 'damage multiplier' I am not a Toyota engineer but in a rear collision hard enough to shatter the OEM rear bunper I can't see this making much of a difference.

 

The only drawback I see is that it’s 2 more points to cause frame damage if your truck gets rear ended. Most bent frames in the rear are a result of the receiver hitch being contacted in a rear end collision. So now instead of one contact point you will have three.

The more damage the better....I don't want a "fixed" truck.

 

Is your hitch only mounted to one side of your frame? Or is it mounted with 2 points to your frame?

 

I waited 8 months for my Mobtown rear bumper with swingout. 8 weeks would have been a dream

I'm back with my update and install! I got them today and just finished up installing. Very beefy and should make for some good extra bumper protection as well. I love NYTOP and wanted to support them in the hope they bring some more products to the 3rd Gen Tacoma. Very easy install, just remove 4 of the 5 bolts that hold on the hitch on each side and reinstall with the mounts attached. I went with black since my truck is lunar rock, I don't think the red accents works with LR personally.

 

8-14 weeks is the boat travel time from china to here. Any good welder/fabricator could make those up in no time right here in the USA

I guess the Taco engineers thought the extra 2 recovery points are value add

 

They look cool and any recovery point is better than none but...
How much recovering do y'all really do? I've been wheeling since about 1993 and I have only participated in two recoveries:
1. Rolled a truck in a ditch and down an embankment - Needed a wrecker to get that totaled heap out.
2. My neighbor backed his 4wd Chevy into his yard to spread mulch and didn't realize that the grass and black soil under it were going to be slicker than owl snot. I never left the pavement, kept it in 2WD and pulled him back to his drive way.

Also, I see the inner edges are chamfered / beveled a little but I worry that it is going to shred recovery gear, straps, ropes, etc... Would be cool if they could put a full radiused bull nose inside that slot.
Until then I'm sticking with $30 shackles for all of my "recovery" work that seems to happen once a decade. Not paying $700 for added liability.

 

This kind of makes sense. What would hypothetically protect the frame the most? Removing the factory receiver altogether? Where does a plate rear bumper fit in to the equation?

 

We should not be normalizing this lol. Got my skids and sliders shipped under a week from ordering, I'll be buying bumpers from whoever has the lowest lead time, probably Cali raised. Very unprofessional to require 2 months for this kind of thing, imo.
