I bought a new 2023 Tacoma last week. It is my third in a row from the same dealership. It has a factory installed Tonneau cover. I noticed that the inside of my truck bed gets wet when it rains. I mentioned it to the service department at the dealership and told them that neither of my previous covers on my other two Tacomas ever leaked at all. The service advisor told me that the cover is NOT meant to prevent leakage into the bed of the truck. So, what is for? Is he correct? I disagree with him.

Your service advisor is right. Tonneau covers keep stuff relatively dry and secure, but they are rarely waterproof barriers. You can tweak the adjustment points to help with water intrusion a bit and sometimes that can be enough to seal it up. But expecting it to be 100% bone dry in the bed might be a tad unreasonable.

There’s lots of posts around here about sealing the bed with good tips and pictures. From my understanding people have had varying degrees of success

He is right, no tonneau cover is designed to be waterproof.

Fact your 2 last ones were watertight is a miracle.

I have the factory tonneau cover on mine, and unless the rain is coming down sideways due to high winds, the bed says dry. It is also worth mentioning car washes also force a small amount of water into the bed.
