Plastidipped my wheels a little differently and made a dumb mistake

I decided to plastidip my wheels and try to do it in a way that I wouldn’t have to worry about it getting damaged when rotating my tires. I put a paper plate over the center of the wheel and just plastidip around it to cover the machined silver. It turned out OK although there is a little bit of a lip where I had to pull the plate off so in hindsight, I probably wouldn’t have done it this way. At least now I can get my lugs off without worrying about damaging any plastidip since the plastidip doesn’t even start until about 2 inches outside of the lug nut holes.

My dumb mistake though was that I didn’t even think about needing to mask up. I did it in my garage with both bays open but that probably wasn’t enough ventilation. That evening, when I was done, I had a little black plastidip dust up my nose. I feel fine this morning, but it was a stupid move on my part to not protect myself.

Why not pull the wheel off, pop out the center cap, mask the half moon of the lug nut bore and paint? That way the only masking line you will have is right where the face rotates to the lug nut bore. All one color except for the cap and you won't worry about the socket peeling/scratching it.

Yeah that was a way to go as well. In hindsight it would have probably been just as easy to do that. Oh well. It wasn’t expensive and I can peel off the plastidip and start over if I feel like it.

Another option is to just paint them one by one using the spare just prep and take your time. Use index cards between the tire and rim for a easy mask off, quick and easier than tape. I did years ago on a subaru it held up well.
