It has a 3-cylinder Detroit Diesel powerplant from a Gama Goat! It started life as a 4.0L/automatic Ranger XLT, but the owner made it truly one-of-a-kind with this swap. It has been manual-swapped, but I forget what kinda of transmission it is. The original Ford Rangers had front disc/rear drum brakes until the 2010 model year, with 2010 and final year 2011s getting 4-wheel disc. This owner fitted a positraction rear with disc brakes from a Ford Explorer. The A/C has been removed, but the truck is otherwise fully functional, and the factory cruise control still works! Even more amazing is that the owner managed to make the OBD2 system work with this diesel engine!

 

He actually uses it as a truck...

 

He bought a newer Ranger out in Minnesota that has a clean title and is in good shape, but has a bad engine. He drove out to Minnesota in the 2000 Ranger with an empty trailer, and towed the newer Ranger back. He is considering swapping the Detroit into the newer Ranger because it is newer and in better shape.

 

If you look closely at the steering column, you will see that it clearly left the factory with an automatic transmission...

Seriously, the dog was no joke. She initially licked my face and let me pet her (she also let @Stitchgirl90 pet her), but she is very protective of her owners and the truck, and turned into a vicious guard dog when I tried to take interior pictures on the driver's side. The owner's wife had to take the dog out of the truck in order for me to get the pictures you see below...

 

I didn't think to ask. This was the last truck Amanda and I looked at before grabbing lunch, so food was on our minds...

 

You mean besides the shifter

It might be from an older one, one of my bosses in college drove a Ranger with that shifter

A very unique 1997 Ford Ranger!

The second "axle" on the truck is just a tag axle and is actually a separate trailer that allows the truck to function as a 5th wheel hauler!

 

The original owner drove a lot for work and the truck presently has about 315K miles on it. This Ranger is an XLT, but a very basic XLT, and the only creature comfort it has is air-conditioning (power steering and power antilock brakes were standard across the board by 1997). Presumably because the original owner spent a lot of time on the road, he added aftermarket cruise control. The A/C does not presently work (which the current owner plans on fixing since he lives in Georgia), but the truck is mechanically sound. Under the hood is a 4.0L V6 mated to a 5-speed manual transmission...
