Is it worth to paint over e-coat?

    Howdy folks,

my 2015 taco's paint is chipping and flaking away around the windows and edges of the doors. Its not a massive deal since the e-coat is still consistent underneath and I don't live in the rust belt. Is the DIY repaint worth it? I was recommended to put a clearcoat over it to mitigate further flaking, but even that feels like unnecessary effort. Thoughts?

White truck aka super white 040?

I would do something about it. It’s only going to get worse. Shit will start coming off in chunks if you do nothing.

@TegoTaco touched his up and it turned out nicely. He’s got the paint code for a rattle can and can give you some pointers.

Ecoat is basically a primer, paint is your sealant. So yes I wouldn't let it go.

Yessir, it is white 040. I'll send him a message and see what he says. Thanks!

Gotcha! The owners before me appeared to have tried to touch it up a bit but it looks like it turned out messy and the surrounding original coat is flaking at the seams. Thanks for the rec, I'll look into it a bit more and see what comes up. Also, what does "SP" mean? A lil new here.

here’s some photos I grabbed. The areas under the door along the frame are similar levels of flaking to the areas around the windows.

Well OP, I've gotta give you credit, you're remarkably calm about this compared to everyone else in your situation. Good luck with the paint.

    What is your budget?

How is the rest of your paint on your truck? Is it chalky?

Sorry bout the long response-time, life has been happening recently and haven't had much time to visit here.

I'd say my budget cap is somewhere around 300$.
Also, mostly around the door areas. I think I noticed it on the front fender nearest to the driver side door. Gave me a lil shiver down my back after

For about that much (if you count your labor as free) you could Durabak the whole truck. I'm going that route myself - it goes on very nicely with the correct rollers and is available untextured.

What does the durabak process usually involve? I was probably gonna sand/sandblast the bad spots (and where its getting bad) and prime, paint, and clearcoat.

Rough up everything (80/100 grit then red scotchbrite), mask what you don't want coated (I'd go ahead and remove head/tail lights and grille/flares), wipe with xylene to remove any dust or grease, then roll on 2 layers sequentially.

A gallon should be enough to do a Taco, but I'd have an extra quart on hand just in case.

Sounds easy enough. You got any videos you'd suggest I watch? Or some threads that show the process firsthand?

I've done a ton of research on it and have mostly picked up how NOT to do it in bits and pieces. I'm really trying to get it done before winter, and I'm going to try to do a good writeup when I do.

When I order the stuff I'm going to crack into my bookmark pile and review everything. When I do I'll try to remember to come back to this thread and hook you up with the stuff that seems most helpful.

I bought a roll of 100ft x 5ft vvivid vinyl for $450 (just north of your stated budget) and wrapped my truck grey. My 040 paint was headed down the same path as the others, like yours.
