Y’all probably saw a few threads on my progress with Son’s future Taco…….
    96 5 lug 2.4L
Still weeks away from finishing getting veh mechanically sound.
But started researching rim swaps away from 14’s Steelies
    Keeping eye out on CL
After over a week of measurement data collected
I pulled trigger on 14 Sonata rims

    Hi Steve

thanks for posting; I’ve been wrestling with the same issue on my ‘99 5-lug.

I recently picked up a freebie set of 1998 Jeep Cherokee wheels (16x7, 71.5 hub bore, 25mm offset)…no tires, but I hope to have a takeoff 225/55-16 installed just to check clearances before committing to a new set mounted/balanced. Will need hub rings for these.

I sought out the ET25 Jeep rims out of concern for upper ball joint clearance, which looked tight with the 14”s, but your pics show that the 16” ET50 Sonata rims are large enough to clear OVER the ball joint…nice! And the Sonata rims are much better looking than the kinda clunky Cherokee wheels…

I can’t tell what size tire is on your rims, but does it clear the frame and inner fender at full steering lock?

Finally, (and this is just my editorial overkill tendency) I notice you referred to 14 steelies, but have 15x6 written down as Tacoma wheels in your notes. My understanding is the stock early Tacoma wheel is 14x5 ET34; any thoughts on this.

    Thanks man!
    So to answer your Q’s
-205 55 r16 are the trash tires from pix
If those size are mounted, will definitely clear frame/bumper/dog leg of fender
Now I’m going to go bigger, but nothing crazy
Once I make mechanically sound/save up some tire $$…..will surely update
Hell 15yr old son has won $180 in fantasy NASCAR after the end of second segment….he might have to toss something in the tire pot!
(Wheel bearings scheduled wrenching this weekend)
IMO 235’s will be pushing it
-yeah I ran into a site that had legit measurements of a 15inch Toyota stock rim….knew that fit….went with that for data. With all my hours of searching, couldn’t find stock ‘legit’ Steel measurements

Well, I found a 215/55-16 tire for one of the Cherokee rims (16x7, +25.4 mm offset) to check for clearance.

That tire is almost identical in height to the stock 195/75-14 on the 14x5 +34mm offset Toyota rim. . Attached are pics comparing the two combinations installed after a ride around the block to settle the suspension.

Not great; my high-tech tool (old growth redwood!) suggests insufficient offset; might not hit the fender at stock ride height, but I’m planning a 3” drop.

Backspacing works out almost the same on both rims and clears the upper control arm ball joint by over an inch, so a 16” (or 17”) rim with more offset will easily fit and tuck the tire in for enough fender clearance.

    Back to Craigslist!

    Did u see my thread?
    Totally lucked out……

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/5-lug-oe-rim-swap-solved….809950/

    measurements/clearance pix too^^^

man those classic grnd Cherokee rims don’t look bad. I see what your concern is thou(off set….sticking out too far)

IF i could find some Mustang rims at decent price, would have waited.
17’s fit just fine from my searches
But can’t afford 17 inch tires
Bc ‘Mustang’ rims CL sellers bump up price

pulled trigger on these for a hundo

    BTW
    I still wasn’t 100% positive on off set….everything else was a match

I went to Discount Tire….fed guy at counter a story(wasn’t going to buy anything)
He plugged those measurements (hand written pix) into his computer
Said that Sonata 16’s would fit/clear NP
He wasn’t sure about caliper clearance.
    Took a chance for $100
Can’t believe how good they fit/clear
-center caps fit over front dust caps
    -steelies lugs fit as well

    hope this helps brother!
