No mater what trim level you get that Tacoma 4x4 is very capable out of the box. Majority of folks never take their mall crawler off any road. Lots have the rear e-locker as a decoration.

    all tore up already
Lockers have nothing to do with 4wd. 4wd means when engaged both the front and rear axle are locked together and turn at same rate which is why it will bind when turning on pavement. Locker means inside and outside wheels turn at same rate.

This has nothing to do with true offroaders mentality or the capability of the vehicle, 4wd describes how it functions mechanically. Dont muddy the waters and identify as an awd vehicle or 2wd vehicle because you/they/them dont have "offroad" in its name

keep in mind, if you decide you want a locker, there are options. Yes, a sport is a true four-wheel-drive. However, even an off-road Tacoma will be faced with a limitation’s.

And on top that open diffs that suck balls.

TC on newer Tacomas works very well. I haven’t needed a locker yet.

Yes it is a "true" four wheel drive vehicle if by four wheel drive you mean it has a transfer case that sends power to one tire up front and the other tire in the back with an electronically controlled limited slip function. All four wheels driving would require locking differentials which can be upgraded. Mine is a 2021 TRD Sport - upgrades in my build thread linked in sig.

It can break trail with a 3500# travel trailer.

It does camp grounds equally well

It works in the snow too.

Did you ask why the requirement? Just curious, it would be interesting to know.

They actually said that without rear lockers the typical TRD sport would not have the capability of making it through 90% of the trails they run

Then get an off road to bring that number down to 50%. With a pro, it will only be 1%, of course...
    :stirthepot: :D

It sounds like they are a pretty hard core crawling club. For that to be true, then most jeeps they have would need to be well modded. You'd need a different (or very modified) vehicle for that. It does not seem like a lot of fun (in a mildly modded Taco - of any trim) otherwise...
If a Taco can't do 90% without a locker, then what would be the likely number WITH a locker? Say 60-70% - still not very attractive.

Nuff said. I wish they came with a front locker too.

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
The rear locker was an invention to make simpleton capable. It's of very rare use... I've completed multiple "extreme " 4x4 trails with my sport. The locker is secondary to completing your skid plate package.... If you don't have a transfer differential and transmission plate.. a locker is of zero value... you will just figure out how to high center your truck on its oil pan or transmission....

I'd take my 07 sport on a downhill over my pro... both are manual. But the software in the 23 pro atrac is a fucking joke... so you end up turning it all off in extreme angles anyways
