Timing gear set

So as the progress on rebuilding this tacoma continues I'm getting ready to start some engine work. The mileage is 188k, not 160k like I thought it was. (That's the other truck). It ran like a well oiled clock. But, seen as how I'm here..........lets spend some more money.
I all ready picked up a oem engine gasket set. Now for the timing chain and components I'm finding it to not be smooth sailing. Yoda shop has a kit for 1307.00 that comes with the gaskets and seal I all ready have.
Next is McGeorge toyota parts. I can get only what I need (no gaskets) for 1100.00
Last choice is I see a company called LC Engineering has a kit (aftermarket) for 680.00
Anyone with any insight who has suggestions, comments, or new directions are more than welcome to shed some light.
And to be honest, I am having a blast with this project. After all, it was the first new truck I ever bought.

Are you sure you need all that .....

I'd just buy the chain, guides and tensioner....

and get rid of the balance shafts.....balance shaft delete...

that will get rid of most of the rest of those compents in tha $1300 set...
unnecessary parts...

none of that other stuff wears.....

Thank you again @O'Silver_Taco. This truck is the daily driver and goes on 3/400 mile trip every year. I'm leaning toward going with the LCE set for 680. I'm fine with keeping the balance shafts. I have a woods truck for play time. I'm following you two on @woad4 thread. That's been very helpful for me. I've never opened up a 2.7 (or any 4 cyl) before. Ford's 428 cobra jet's from the late 60's are what I've always played with. This is like learning to read again. I'm sure you'll be hearing from me again.

I wasn't planning on doing my timing set, i have the factory service manual, and it has a page for inspecting the guides, tensioner, chain and sprockets. If it fails or is close to those limits I will purchase the kit, I don't really want to pull the timing cover and oil pan if I don't have to. If you want I can email that document to you..

add a straight edge and new head bolts to that list.

I'll also take a close look at the exhaust manifold, seems like they like to have cracks.

So far thats my shopping list.

 

Now when I need parts for my truck Mcgeorge is my goto for toyota oem parts...

If you give em your vin #.......they'll never ship u the wrong parts......unless you override their advice...
or truck has been mod'd....

None of these online toyota parts shipping is cheap.....so I always put together a decent list before next order.....

I would also break down and buy a brandnew harmonic balancer .....doorman...

I even replaced my engine mounts with brandnew oems...

and a brandnew flex plate....

 

IF engine is taken out make sure you do a brandnew front seal on your tranny...


when you shift things around your more likely to get a new leak....

 

@woad4, that was very kind of you to take the time to put that list together for me. By the sounds of it, I think that if we had out trucks next to each other in a garage we'd have "The Shop for Wayward Toyota's". Thank you for the offer of the manual pages but I did buy the factory repair and maintenance manuals on ebay. And I'm damn glad I did. I'm still concentrating on getting the frame back together. I can't bring myself to go over the rust areas. I have to remove and replace. I'll see if I can get a pic posted. So while this is going on I'm thinking of the weeks to come and what I'll need. And not being real Toyota Savvy I spend my time running around here. (Nice place to be). I'm sure I'll be in touch again soon. Thank you for being such a good sport.
And for you @O'Silver_Taco, I can see you'll be my go to man till I get too annoying. Are you a Toyota mechanic? I like info that is no B.S. "This is how it is. This is how it worked for me. Take it or leave it". Right up my alley. For that front tranny seal, is that for auto or stick or either?

I bought one of these with a bad motor.....its been a fun trip.....

too bad my house isnt in as good shape as the truck....
but we're getting there.....

couple years ago there was a lot better selection of blocks and heads....
but everyone's been gobbling em up..........they've been running out of cores....

a victim of their own success...

 

I'll probably find and resurrect a 3rd gen 4-runner next....

with those being assembled in japan....they are truely Methuselah's


there is really some satisfaction from dropping a new motor....heaven and hell....

the 3rz is the sweet spot.....need anymore power I'd just get the 4.8 V8 tundra...
in a tundra.....

Hi @woad4. I had to go into snails pace mode on the tacoma. Had my 40hp phase converter go down for the shop. It's 20 years old so basically obsolete. That means a new one. Not a big deal. Except for the lead time. Maybe, if I'm lucky, it will be here this Friday. Then next week for the electrician to show up. Amazing how dependent I got on my equipment. So I've been trying to get my work load done and it's taking at least 3 times as long to do it. Press brake, lathe, milling machine, plate shear, iron worker, sanders, saws, etc all on vacation.
I have been on here on a regular basis and following the progress and I see we all have our problems from time to time. Some days are just better than others. I haven't opened up the motor yet only because I want the chassis completely done and sitting on the floor before I tear into something else. Most likely 2 or 3 weeks out. Once the gears get spinning again I'll be posting. Just collecting parts and knowledge for now.
