I will be traveling to SD from Phoenix this week. A few large rocks just fell on I-8 blocking traffic both ways at exit 77 in California. I have the TRD offroad with engine/transmission skid so can take some other-than-fully-civilized roads.

@rgljr831 and @wrekd619 you say that you know that space well. And suggestions, other than I-10 and cut back south?

If able to, take 79 to 78 and head east towards Ocotillo Wells then just stay 78 until you get to 86 or 111 south to I 8.

Not to be rude, but have you looked at a map?

CA-78 runs south right outside of Blythe, then cut north of Anna borrego

Thats from looking at a map for 10 seconds, never taken the route.

Sorry, didn’t look at a map. Didn’t realize that. Was just thinking it wasn’t as far north as 10.

    Thanks for the clarification.

Yeah, OP, this is really between you and a map.

If you look at updating gps map, like on your iphone app, a lot of these major roads are slow moving, and it gets worst the closer into city you get, if ever that was a surprise.

There’s always the 94 to Otay lakes south of phoenix. That would put you due east of Chula Vista. As been stated, there’s the 10 through Blythe, the 78 and the 79. You could do some version of the 10 to the 15, but the 15 is a shit show on a good day, I doubt that’s change any since I’ve been out there.

Oh sorry, my comment was aimed at @RichochetRabbit

Just meant that he should take a look at the map for routes, choose something that seems decent. There should be plenty of paved options.

News about I-15 helps ... Rancho Santa Fe / Del Mar is the location, so I-15 and I-5 figure in. I live in a less-busy part of Phoenix by choice because I choose to avoid crowded traffic.

The only map I have ... thought I had ... Rand-McNally atlas and that detail sux. I just remembered a SoCal map from last year from AAA ...

I-8 westbound is a bug at near exit 77 ... splits into south (interstate) and north (around the mountains) and does not meet again until several miles west. Damn.

There may be detour(s) available but I'm not sure.

Hopefully a couple of rocks are cleared by that time. If not, I don't see why you can't go around off road.
Hopefully that would not involve hours of bumper to bumper cars backed up in a slow crawl towards said rocks.

I just google mapped Phoenix to Chula Vista and it doesn't show a detour. Wouldn't it normally show that the 1-8 is closed by now if there was? Maybe a couple of people pushed those boulders out of the way by now. :notsure:
