RSI Smart Cap

I drove out to Arizona to buy a used 6ft one, no regrets! Had 4 of us to lift from his and set on mine, took maybe 5 minutes. I wouldn't say there's much to check for, it is a steel box.. just check visually for any hidden damage

Best part is you can skip all the building yourself

 

The positive pressure vent has been around since gen 1.

As stated above, it's a basic steel box. Just check the window's functioning, seals, and bolts. You may want to bring a small torque wrench to check all of the cap bolts and the cap to bed bolts.

 

Has anyone mounted max trax or anything to the roof of their smart cap? I’m just trying to think of ways to use up the dead space in the topper

 

I haven't mounted MaxTrax, but I did just install the MOLLE roof panel from Offroad Alliance. Totally love it! Just be warned, shit is HEAVY. They give you just four bolts and some spacers. I added another two bolts in the middle because of the weight.

this stuff and it works perfectly. It was a bit tricky cutting it properly, but I finally got it right. Keeps Looky-Loos from snooping and keeps the sun out when sleeping in the bed. And before some smartass asks why I didn't just get the metal-sided EVOa, it's because I'm a fucking adult who can do what I like and I like the way the EVO Sport looks.

For those of you who have the "newest" of the shipped out product, are your gullwing Molle panels just hook and loop attached? Some photos show they are bolted. Mine are not. And now as the cap gets hot in the summer sun, the adhesive just fails, and the panel falls. This is with no weight. If this is the new design, they really need to figure out a better method or go back to the bolted design.

 

Just checked mine - brand new adventure cap from TX. Attached with velco-ish stuff that looks like a nice melt job waiting to happen. Cannot believe it - does this really survive field testing in South Africa (I'm sure it looked good on powerpoint slides though)? I was going to put a TOW missile on each side. Now what...

 

If that is the same stuff I use at work it can hold a lot of weight.

 

what’s “ a lot”?

if these are what I think they are, plastic interlocking strips, they could hold a decent weight in an idea environment but my concern here is the adhesive on the cap side can melt due to excessive heat, especially with the black metal material.

has anyone reached out to RSI to find out what the capacity is?

 

I would not trust that adhesive in a hot environment... I'd look into modifying it with something like these...

EVOa ordered this morning. Store had 2 left in stock. Should be here next week. Also ordered the table, security screen and Front Runner load bars - 1255 mm.

 

We used the 3M interlocking strips inside MRAPs on the ceiling for mounts that held radios and other various things. The adhesive was very strong and was a pain to remove the brackets to install cables. Is the MOLLE on the door?

 

I'm not familiar with the term MRAP, so color me ignorant there.

from my reading comprehension, which might not be all that great, I gathered it’s on the “windoor”, so the answer to your questions is, yes?

 

Sorry, it’s a mine resistant armored vehicle and adhered that stuff right to be Kevlar and aluminum and as long as it was cleaned properly it stuck without issue. As for your windoor, the struts probably won’t hold much weight open. I can see the heat behind an issue but if it was properly applied it should hold.

 

If memory serves - RSI stated no more than 20 pounds on each gullwing door. But (again - old age and memory and all) I can't recall any static vs dynamic load differences, meaning on a washboard dirt road at speed vs your driveway.

Re the MRAPs and other military uses - fair point. The adhesive does work well in austere environments provided the surface was clean when installing (as the EVOa likely was), and the straps were not removed often (one would attach/reattach items to the molle panel and not frequently remove the molle panel itself).

I spoke with RSI directly. The NA models are adhesive velcro. SA models are standoffs. She said they have been having issues and are working on providing a better adhesive hook and loop. She is sending me some. Not a perfect fix, but RSI has been great to deal with on a few "issues" i've come across. I'll follow up on how it works. But I've also thought about the magnet direction too. 4 to 6 of those will hold.
