Can confirm. One upon a time I thought I was doing something good for a neglected vehicle and then seized a cam after using solvents in a sludged engine lol

It worked! Til a large chunk of sludge broke free and clogged an oil galley

Not sure the laws in your state or the contract under which you purchased the truck, but I'd try and dump it back on the dealer (if you bought from a dealer) if it's at all possible, even if it costs you a bit of money. If you can't, I'd go trade it in on something else. You don't want this engine...it will not last long. Next will be a CEL with cam position codes because the VVT actuator screens are packed full of crap.

This. Large chucks can block the pickup screen and cause engine oil starvation and a ruined engine.

Pull a valve cover and have a look at the upper engine.

Easy and cheap to look and see how bad it is or isn't. Then decide what you want to do.

Don't overthink this. Drive it, a 17 year old truck may well have some issues. That is just something you should assume when buying something that old and the price paid should reflect that. Nothing you can do to fix it at this point other than rebuild/replace the engine if necessary. It wouldn't hurt to change the oil sooner rather than later, but I'd not be surprised at all to see that engine get a lot more miles out of it.

IMG_1777.jpg What does it look like under the oil cap? If it looks like this there’s should be any sludge. If there is run synthetic oil. It’s your best be to clean up any build up. Don’t use marvel mystery oil. That shit is solvent based and will burn off if ran too long. I would look in HPL, high performance lubricants. They’re a new company and gets a lot praise for their products. My 4.0L has 128K.

Instead of adding all these magic chemicals to the engine, several rounds of short oil change intervals with cheaper oil and filters would be a safer bet. You'll want to clean this mess up slowly. After all said and done it'll never really be a "clean" motor. The 4.0 won't care that much though.

If it were mine I'd be doing several rounds of a higher detergent heavy duty oil like Rotella T4 10w30 and a larger filter. But that causes enough controversy in itself, especially if you don't run an OEM Toyota filter around here

If the engine runs fine. Just use oil.
    Don’t add cleaners and additive.
The oil flow on the 1GR (as most engines) is Pump pickup screen to the oil filter.

Your best bet would be to change the oil and filter by 2,500 miles or sooner.
If you continue to see chunks, keep changing it sooner. Once it clears up. Do regular changes.

I suppose you “could” do an oil pressure test and see if the system is low on pressure.
If so, you could drop the pan and inspect the pickup. Other than that. You have nothing else t9 do other than drive it and do maintenance like it should have been done in the first place.
