Anyone want to post pics and have any recommendations for a tool box that fits the 1st gen tacoma's well? I'm leaning towards black. Truck is silver.

Seeing how the small bed is mostly useless to me and I have to hook up a trailer when I go to the hardware store - I figure I might as well put a tool box on it since right now, any time we load up the family in the truck, I have to take out my tool kit and box of tie-downs and set them on the porch to make room for people.

I’m unsure about the dimensions of your truck but they make boxes and install kits that fit just about everything. I went with an aluminum diamond plate but they make the aluminum in black as well.I have seen composite but I’ve never been a fan of those. I got mine at a local truck accessory shop so if you have one in your area I would try them first. It was high quality and not the cheapest option but that’s what I wanted. They installed it for free and I’ve had no problem in the 5 years I’ve owned it.

I hated mine (also in AZ). Impossible to keep clean, hot, more of a PITA than anything. Had a silver one from Lowes. If you get one, I'd find a commercial grade brand and don't bother with the ones with tapered edges - if it doesn't fit behind the wheel wells, don't get it.

I have a cheap tonneau cover now with carpeted bed and never been happier.

This truck box has been on a (95?) Nissan extended cab, old Dodge Ram, Nissan standard cab, 95 Ranger, 07 Nissan extended cab, and now 03 Taco. I think I picked it up in a Diamond building supply store and it cost me $99 (then.) I love that the lids open from the side without getting in the bed. Locks still work and had to replace the 20lb lid shocks with 40lb shocks from Autozone. Plenty of room under for lumber or your feet if camped out sleeping in the back. Fastened will drill-free mounts. I wouldn't want any other kind of box. Sorry can't remember make/model.

Thanks for sharing. I would love one of those for my Xtra cab! The size and fit are perfect. Any chance you could poke around and see if you can find a label or plate identifying the make and model?

I can't believe I found this. It's not the exact one, if you look close mine has a center section over the top of the box. But Better Built rings a bell, not sure if you'll find this exact one. It has to be over 20 years old, probably don't make this exact model any more. The angled corners are to fit around wheel wells of bigger trucks.

Hey thanks a lot for looking into this! I really appreciate it. Boy that does look very similar to yours. I'm going to research a bit to see if I can find one local. I'd like to look over the unit and make sure it doesn't have that all to common 'chintzy' feel to it. You never know if it's been cheapened out all these years later.
