stock shocks aren't going to last long as a desert racer,, but still should be hitting the bumpstops.

Yeah, I'm betting it's not the tire size - I have the same tires KO2s 265/75R16s and have done some hard wheeling lately (not desert racing though) no rubbing. Desert racing and no alignment I bet is the answer.

OR wheels have slightly less offset but that’s because they’re narrower. Sport wheels are 12.52mm wider, but the offset is 5mm deeper so the center of the contact patch is in almost the exact same spot. There is no reason he should be rubbing on stock wheels, but as far as my reading goes he hasn’t confirmed that he has stock wheels.

Offset doesnt mean much without wheel width specs and even then the only issues you would see with per se a 9" wheel with 38et is near the cab mount or at the fender irregardless of stock wheels or not.

Rubbing at the top of wheel wells is more of an issue running 37" tires at full stuff and aired down. More than likely its a suspension issue as stated earlier and OP could use a good bumpstop like wheelers and new shock absorbers ( possibly higher spring rate )

Even then the stock tacoma front suspension could use alot of gusseting and reinforcement to prevent deflection and flex during suspension travel but that really isnt the issue here

I run a 265/75/16 Toyo Open Country AT3 on my 2019 TRD Pro and have had zero rubbing even at full flex off road. I have run in Moab hard through washboard desert and even at full turn and suspension compression I don't have any rub. My upper wheel wells also don't have any of the rubber compound I see in your photo. Not sure if that is because of the difference in year model or if someone added that undercoat looking stuff. I have even run Rekgen mudguards with mine and not rubbed.

Update… I spent 5k on Fox 2.5 DSC shocks and Dirt King UCA’s. Hopefully that fixes it.

Just curious, it might be that I'm old, but does it look like the vehicle is sitting way lower than normal? Not much room between tire and wheel well in the 1st and last picture. Is the rubbing the same on both sides?

21,000+/- miles and “run pretty hard in the desert” to me means it isn’t the tire size, but rather something is broken or worn out.

Hopefully the replacement parts you purchased fix the issue. I probably would’ve done a bit more diagnosing, but it’s your money.

The story reminds me of when I was heavily into single track mountain biking. We used to joke that all mountain bikes cost about $2k. You either bought the $2k bike up front, or you bought the $1k bike and replaced the parts that break until you spend $2K.
