I'm 65. I've had my current Tacoma 16 years on Tuesday. My next one will be my last truck. I like my 2nd gen but am not interested in the 3rd gens. I'm going to wait until at least this time next year, maybe early 2025 to see how the '24's are received. If I like what I see, I'll buy a 24. If not, I don't know what I'll do. Maybe rebuild/repaint what I have.

So, you received plenty of input. What's the decision and why?

It’s not really up for debate if you compare the specs. Far more power, improved MPGs, improved features. There’s no category the 4th doesn’t improve on or at least break even with.

Thanks everyone the different perspectives have been good to hear. I think I am probably going to buy it, $38k OTD seems like a good deal right now especially with my 2021 trade in valued at $25k, and wait until 2026ish when the kinks have all been worked out of the 4th gen and then possibly trade the 23 in or sell it and get the 4th if it turns out to be a hit. Seems like the 2023, especially with the naturally aspirated V6, will hold its value pretty well as it is the last of a generation (even with some of the issues mentioned here).

I fully agree with you. And I'm excited for the 4th gen. Can't wait to drive one and feel the difference in power.

Don’t think anyone’s arguing that the 24 isn’t an upgrade in nearly every way on paper. Just that it is a risk to buy the first model year of any new generation/platform car. It’s common across a lot of manufacturers.

I’m specifically aware of stuff with the 2nd gen Tacomas since I own one. For example, the 05-06 V6s might have had head gasket issues. The 2nd gen 2.7 4-cyls were released with a plastic coolant bypass pipe that would embrittle and leak after a bunch of heat cycles, not a known issue until people started hitting high miles. Toyota came out with a replacement metal bypass tube for the later models. Just some anecdotes on early model years having undiagnosed bugs/faults. Is it Toyota’s fault? Yes, but it’s also impossible for any manufacturer to hit 2 million+ testing hours/miles before production.

Edit: I would still love a 24 but I’m too scared to be a guinea pig myself.

Wait, did I miss something? I thought you said you got rid of a 2001 and now you have also have a '21 that you are going to trade in on a '23?

I will preface this by saying I just purchased my first Tacoma, a 2023. Now do I believe you should purchase a 2023 or get the 2024, there may be issues with a first year model of any kind but if nobody purchases the first model year there would never be new models. Do I think there will be problems with a 2024? Maybe but they will be taken care of. The bottom line is, if you like the style of the 2024, buy it.

I would wait at least a few years to buy the new gen Tacoma. Just look at how they butchered the new tundra and all it’s problems….

People casting all this FUD about first year issues need to realize the 2.4 turbo drivetrain will already have been released for two years in the Lexus NX and RX.

Ahhhh, okay, now I get it :). Well, it sounds like you've made a decision. There will always someone to rain on your parade. I'm not that person. Enjoy your new truck.
