It's no longer as much about heat cycles. It's still about building cylinder pressure which requires short wide open throttle runs. Idling a new engine to seat the rings for extended periods is the worse thing you can do.

I am not sure if you guys know this guy. He has plenty of useful videos & information without extra bs.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOcA6Dp8ZJQ&t=683s

This is just one of his videos, its not about 1K oil change but it shows 2.7L engine taken out.

I think I will go with oil change at 1K miles, I am just now debating should I go with premium Valvoline or Mobil1. I want best for my truck. I've used 5-30 Valvoline for my 4runner v6, but Tacoma takes 0-20, so that oil I have in 2 full won't be going in there.

If changing it makes you more comfortable - do it...I always do early 1st oil change on all of my new vehicles (1-2K on trucks) and also on our farm equipment (tractors, atvs, utvs, motorcycles, 4wheelers, etc).

Most folks say it is overkill and that's probably true. I'm a stickler for maintenance and it's worked out for this old/Boomer Gen. so I'll stick to it.

**My current Tacoma (2019 TRD OR) has just under 250K miles - many in 4WD...no issues at all other than routine maintenance , including oil changes every 4500-4900 miles. My truck still looks and drives like new.

I really enjoy threads about oil. It’s like people watching. Everyone has their own reasons for what interval, viscosity or brand they use. People chime in either upset, frustrated, sarcastic, or helpful. It’s great! Then in a different thread they all agree….Fuck the STEALERSHIP!

If your one of those that can't get enough of changing your oil, and just bought a new truck...go with something like castrol regular dino motor oil for the first couple thousand miles before switching over to a full, or even 100% synthetic. Your rings will thank you.

You will be fine either way. And at 1k it really can’t hurt you either, so if you’re unsure just go ahead with it. They’re both good oils. Don’t overthink it :)

I disagree. I’ve done the early oil changes and moved on to mobile one on every new vehicle. I bought the last 20 years. I’ve done all the changes at 500 or less. To date, I have not had an engine that used oil.

The FJ was change that 400 miles. Switch to mobile one. There’s 147,000 miles and use absolutely zero oil @ 5K

I think you missed my point. By breaking in a new engine with a dino oil, it's far easier, and sooner for the rings to seat...in the end you'll get a bit more hp too. It's got nothing to do with burning, or using oil. Any full synthetic, or 100% one from the get go will make the the rings harder to seat when looking to get the best performance.

Tip: the ESP and the “Truck & SUV” variants are a bit better than others.

I hear what you’re saying. I just don’t agree with it. It’s not been my experience in the last 42 years of working on and building engines. Rebuilt my 1st engine at 14.

It is for the first few starts for engine builders, not new factory vehicles after 1000 mi.

Unless you immediately drain the factory fill at the dealership before the first test drive and replace with break in oil, this is a moot point. Any ring seating happens within the first 20 miles or so.

Toyota does an initial break-in procedure in production of the engines before they get shipped out. Toyota’s engineers know what they’re doing.

If you’re worried about it, just do a hard break in with a couple hard acceleration runs to redline once the engine is warmed up. Changing oil and filter early within the first 1000 mi or so is more about removing metal particles than anything.

HAHA...It seems like it - my office is 60 miles away from home...we own a horse farm in the middle of nowhere and I'm always going somewhere. My wife - does not work, she puts around 10K (maybe less) on her 4Runner.

They went downhill after the Calumet acquisition. You can get much better oil now, and even better oil for the price.
