*If this is the wrong forum my apologies in advance…

So I bought this brand new jack for general maintenance on my truck. I added oil to it and it seemed to go up and down fine when cranking the handle on the ground with no resistance, just the jack on the floor.

So I was about to use the jack the red plug blew out and oil from the jack went everywhere (I may have over filled it). Anyways, two other parts flew out a spring and some kind of pin piece.

My question is, did these all come from under the red plug? If so what is the order of putting these back in? The owners manual has a parts picture but nothing about this part of the jack for some reason.

The other problem is the saddle goes up and down fine on the ground but when I place it under a vehicle it jacks the vehicle up but it eventually gets to a point where it stops and doesn’t jack the vehicle up anymore.

    Thanks.

Honestly, I would have lost all trust in that jack between the parts flying and the issues lifting the vehicle and would go with a better jack, if possible.

Harbor freight Daytona floor jacks are awesome bang for the buck, I’ve used the piss out of mine.

If you’re dead set on keeping the one above, I can’t help with your specific question unfortunately but I wish you the best of luck with it and hope you’re able to get the issues resolved.

Yeah…I was kind of wondering the same thing if I should just get a new one. It sucks wasting all this time on this one.

If it helps any, harbor freight is probably going to have a Labor Day sale this weekend so you could save 10%-15% on a jack if you go that route. I keep an eye on their instagram for their sales but they’re also on their websites front page usually.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
I have never bought a jack that oil needed installed from new! Was that in the instructions??

The solid metal piece goes in first then the spring then your plug.

If you can return this jack do so. If only for store credit something should be useful.

Why did you add oil to a brand new jack? I have the same Torin Big Red and used it right out of the box without issue. I also have a Torin Big Red engine hoist that worked right out of the box, nothing needed.

If I were you I would call up Torin's customer service/ help line and explain what happened. They should be able to help. You have a quality jack but I think this may fall into operator error. I wouldn't blame Toyota if I put 12.4 quarts of oil in my Tacoma when it came with 6.2 quarts from the factory and stuff blew up.

The only thing it says to do before first use is to purge the air. So I did that. Then I saw a portion in the manual about adding oil but it didn’t really say there was oil already in there. So I put some in. I’m wondering if there was already some in it and it didn’t need any now you mention it. This is my first jack so kind of learning I go.

To much oil will cause just what happened.

    Good luck going forward .

If something blew out under pressure then I would assume that plug threads were stripped or weakened. Consequently, seals elsewhere in the system could also be weakened.

If this were a job site, this would be cause enough to pull the tool from service and replace it. I try to practice the same at home - I personally would not use a jack that blew an oil plug.

Can you get us some better pics of the jack model number? Should be able to find a diagram.

my guess would be there is a check ball in the hole, then the black insert goes in (stud up) and then the spring followed by the red part which assume screws in. Better pics of what you have would be a huge help

Over filling any thing hydraulic is a big no no it does not compress, it has to have some place to go.

    Here’s some more pictures.

The last two shows that tiny red plug with it inserted and with it out. But I’m not sure the spring and pin came from there since it looks like a screw of some sort. So I’m not sure where that spring and pin came out of. I can’t seem to find them in the manual.

I’m thinking I didn’t need to add oil. I overfilled it. The oil contents were too much pressure and it essentially blew part of the jack out. But now I’m concerned about the safety of this thing and it doesn’t jack a vehicle up all the way either. But the saddle will go up all the way on the floor after cranking the handle up and down. I did purge the air earlier.

There is supposed to be air space if it's over full it's going to blow the vent plug out of the jack when you let the jack down. I would not use that jack until some one has a look at it. If it does not go all the way up you have lost enough oil that it won't. The little red plug is just a cover.

Thanks for the pics - looks like that red cap was for a vent which was needed due to the additional hydraulic fluid you added. Not sure where the spring and insert came from but they do look like parts that go in a jack. May be worth calling the manufacturer to see what they say…

Edit… best I can find on a legit parts diagram. You can see where that small spring and component may go… beneath those large diameter screws. Perhaps it was an extra, or came out when you filled it?
