Thats true ,the 2gr-fks is a Lexus engine after all, I was mainly taking about the seat of the pants feel compared to the t24a-fts. The 2.4l shares a lot of features actually like both direct and port injection. That being said the 2gr family has been around since 2002 and the Atkinson cycle on the fks is simulated.

4G63 Talon was my first car. Those engines had an incredible run.

Don’t think you have to worry about the new Tacoma not feeling like a truck, think it is more about BOF vs Unibody than the engine is why the difference. My family owns Priuses, RAV4, and Highlander. Have driven them all, when I jump back in my Taco, you can’t beat the feeling, it feels solid, it feels like a truck. Co-worker has a Bronco, probably the closest thing out there right now to the 4G since it has a linked rear suspension. That feels even more rugged than the Taco since the engine has some bottom end, it is real punchy off the line, it feels like how a truck engine should. Guess the Tacoma will be the same. The hybrid should be ridiculous. Honestly think it is too power much for a midsize truck, but this is America, and lotsa insecure dudes & dudettes out there that need that for their fragile ego. Would have much rather seen more efficiency than all out power.

That said feel the current V6 has plenty of power for me, it does make 80% of its peak torque at a low RPM…more than enough for what I do. Some guys like to run the ECT button all the time, feels too punchy for me. Only use it climbing passes in the mountains when it is loaded down on trips.

The is are a few things Toyota missed on the 4G that made me feel like I don’t need to run out a buy one. Didn’t even want a 3rd Gen but my wife talked me into it, she got tired of me always working on and bitching about the 1st Gen. Bought it more out of necessity than wants. Now that I have it, I love it, think that is more about me not worrying if it is going to break down than anything.

Production starts in December for the non hybrid engine and April for the hybrid. Figure 6 to 8 weeks from start of production on when they will start hitting lots.

Well the dog is on his last legs and the wife is just coming to the end of first trimester so I’m probably going to have to dig the seats out of storage.

Oh man that sucks, sorry about your dog. I hate that part of having a dog. Lost ours 6 years ago, can’t seem to get another one.

    Unfortunate about the kid too… :p j/k :D.

Think I would just do a 4WD Sprinter van instead of a Taco. Lots of room for kids and gear, decent fuel economy.

Thanks, this time around losing the dog won't be so hard. We lost our dog 3 years ago he was only 8 yo and the same week we inherited Dusty (current dog also known as ding dong) from my father in law. That was a shitty week...

I could definitely do a camper, would be a VW for me though. Would be handy if it could tow our 5klb TT also.

Welcome. Had dogs most of life, dunno can’t seem to get another one, maybe if I am out in the boonies and res dog happens to jump in the truck, maybe… have a couple cats now, they are way easier. Dog is like having a 6 year old kid that requires constant attention, a cat is like having a grumpy 43 year old roommate that really doesn’t want you there…

Ahhh the allure of a VW camper, had ‘73 Westy for 8 years, loved it but it was miserable to drive long distances, or if the weather wasn’t perfect. Thought of doing a vanagon syncro with a Suby engine…but those things are nothing but electrical and mechanical headaches. Be nice if Toyota brought the HiAce over here, but that will never happen. They are all about catering to Tacoma Bros…

I would prefer a HiAce over a Tacoma.

Y'all must be wearing rose tinted glasses about the 3rd gen because the storage space is just awful to use and get to in that truck, terrible design for ease of use.
To go from a flat load area to seats again you have to raise the back cushions, remove all 3 headrests from the bottom cushions and insert them into the seat backs, go fishing for all 3 belt buckles, then put the bottom cushions back.

Skip to 19:00 and it is quite clear how much more underseat storage there is in this new truck.

Belt buckles stay in place, no removing headrests, and no fooling with bottom seat cushions just to get to the behind seat storage.
