So I just changed my head gasket on my 1998 tacoma (3rzfe). Brought cylinder head to shop and had them do a valve job and resurface. Did a few other things like replace belts, fuel filter, water pump and coolant sensor. When I started it, fuel started leaking heavily from one of the fuel injectors and the engine barely runs. I was pretty meticulous with the timing but of course that’s my worst fear.

Any obvious culprits you guys can think of?

    thanks in advance.

Do you have a check engine light on?
Have you scanned it for codes?

I have, no codes. But haven’t kept it running longer than a few seconds just in case it is timing related.

If it were timing related and that bad, you would have already bent the valves.
Let it run and see if you can set a code. Just don’t rev it up really high.
Try to keep it at idle or around 1,000 rpm.

    Oh we’re getting a code p0120 (throttle/pedal position sensor/switch a circuit).

Truck jumps up to 3k rpm’s on start and then dies. Assuming it’s something with the throttle body (sensor, misplaced hose). Going to start troubleshooting…

Do you have a voltage meter?
    Check your PMs

    Info headed your way.

So I caught a bad gasket on the EGR valve that I replaced and it definitely fixed the high RPM on start, however engine performance is pretty dogshit especially on idle - to the point where it'll stall out after 30 seconds to a minute (keeping it at 2k RPM's isn't terrible but not as good as pre-head gasket failure). I'm going back and rechecking my work starting with the timing and now I have myself second guessing. Based on the below pictures I feel like I may be off a tooth on the cam sprocket (although I don't know how this would've happened as I ziptied the sprocket and chain while I worked). Any idea if I could be off a tooth?

To wrap this up - timing was fine. Replaced spark plugs and we were running great. I assume they got some coolant on them and degraded during the 6 weeks or so of downtime.
