I mean, a hole in the wheel well vs an exposed filter in the engine bay.... Not really gonna make a difference.

Now, a "desert air intake" aka snorkel... Now we're talking

Oh there will be some mods all right
They make a cowl intake for 2nd gens for people with no fender liner who don't like the look of a snorkel

A little bit of a difference, in the engine bay it’s not exposed to having dust, rocks, water, snow being thrown directly into it from your wheels

I want to believe the spoon looking accelerator on the 3rd gens is in part to help keep larger particles out of the intake box, though I replaced acc. with the pro "horn" looking one.

That's definitely the route I'd go. I should see if they make one for the 4Runner. Got a link?

I don't think $120 is too bad. But, it looks like the DIY option might be best as there's no 4Runner options, at least by that manufacturer. Time for a Google search.

They are adjustable, just not very adjustable. At the highest setting, with the stove on the table, it is at a comfortable height. The braces on the bottom of the legs limits the adjustability but the tradeoff is stability, which is a good thing when cooking.

I had looked at some at REI and hemmed & hawed until finding this one. It may not last 20 years but I'm sure I'll get my money's worth out of it.

I ran without fender liners for a long time without issues. Just put like a screen or something over the intake, it’s pretty unconcerning.
