Radiator fan hitting stock oil cooler hose. What gives?

It seems like a new day, a new problem with the truck..

After changing the oil yesterday I happened to notice the lower oil cooler hose had significant rub marks on it from interfering with the radiator fan... I moved the fan blade (with the engine off) to see how close it was to the hose and there is less than 1/8" of clearance between the two..

I put a piece of gorilla tape over the rub mark and went for a spin around the block. The tape had new rub marks from a mile test drive...

I am picking a new set of hoses up from Toyota today after work, but was curious if any of you had any ideas of why this happened in the first place? Initially I thought my motor mounts might be on the way out, but since the fan is connected to the engine, they should move in tandem.

I plan on checking to see if there is any play in the fan/clutch assembly when I get home from work, but I haven't noticed any funky sounds and the fan spins freely with the engine off.

    Any thoughts?

A common place for hoses to leak is at the ends. A common way to fix it is to cut a little of the end off, shove it back on the hose barb, tighten the hose clamp. It isn’t always obvious it going to rub or rest against something hot. Compare the new and old hoses, you might see it.

Before you tighten the hose clamp on the new hose, you can fiddle with it to make sure it’s positioned good. Push pull twist sideways, whatever.

Do you have a supercharger on your truck? Seems like the front-end pulleys. If so if the hose was ever changed the S/C hose is different for more clearance. If the stock one was put on that def would hit the fans.

Yes, the truck has a supercharger that was supposedly installed at the dealership when the truck was brand new. Would you happen to know the part number for the modified S/C hose? I will be picking up two new hoses after work today (for an NA truck) and was planning on seeing if I could modify it to give me some more clearance, but having the proper hoses would be ideal.

Thanks for informing me about this! Time to see if I can track down those S/C hoses.

yah you def cant use the OEM one. they may have it in stock but let me see it may be in the S/C thread. Maybe they fubar'd it and put the wrong one on since its a dealer after purchase add on. May also be an option to add the HPS Hoses too.

this is the HPS silicone hoses if interested:
    https://hpsperformanceproducts.com/...15-toyota-tacoma-4-0l-v6-supercharged-57-2056

Here is a link in the S/C tips and tricks to the part number on superchargers online
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ricks-and-mods.518932/page-1227#post-22732126

    OEM pricing: part #:
    PTR29-35061

    https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/supercharger-trd-lower-engine-radiator-hose-ptr2935061

This one is angled differently since the pulley assemblies get everything a lot closer.

Thank you for taking the time to hunt down those part numbers for me, but I think there was a little miscommunication. My upper and lower radiator hoses are just fine. The hose that is rubbing the fan is coming off of my factory oil cooler housing that runs back into the engine block. See the picture below. (Not my engine bay, but it clearly shows the hose I am referring to. The yellow arrow is where the hose is contacting the fan as seen in my original picture)

I did a pretty extensive search on the Toyota parts catalog and couldn't find a specific supercharger hose. I am guessing this hose design wasn't changed for the supercharger application.

    Excellent!!

From looking at the currently installed hoses it looked like there was some room to trim them shorter and was what I was planning on doing with the new hoses I am picking up today. Glad to see that this is an official requirement for supercharged applications.

Thank you so much for the help, I seriously appreciate it!

Got the new hoses installed after I got home from work today. Man, that lower hose clamp was kind of a pain in the a** with my fat sausage fingers.

The ones that I took off were not trimmed the required 1/2" as the supercharger instructions call for.. I wonder how long they had been installed, and why all of a sudden that one started to hit the fan blade.. Things that make you go hmm.. Either way, I'm glad I noticed it before it sprung a leak on the freeway while I was on my way to Nevada this weekend.

I forgot to take a before picture, but there was only about 1/8" between the hose and fan blades. Now it's closer to 1/2". Much better.

Thanks again for everyone taking the time to reply to this thread as special thanks to @nudavinci64 for showing me those supercharger install instructions.

    Until the next problem!

    Take care everyone.
