2006 Taco full 4 door cab
Hello all. I just joined this forum to be able to post. I have used it in the past for reference and found it very helpful.
I have a 2006 "full crew cab" Taco with the 4 liter engine.
My problem is mentioned here and in other forums, but I seem to have a number of unique things happening.
For about 2 years now my 4 wheel drive light will flash periodically, but recently it went on and stayed on for a whole week and I thought "it is never going to turn off". But it did turn off.
I have noticed that this mostly happens in warmer weather which is kind of convenient, as the 4 wheel drive is more needed in the winter of course. When the light is not lit the 4wd works perfectly, low and high.
However when it is lit, my cruise sometimes works after 20 minutes or so, and other times it never works, esp when it seems that the light is on for some period of time.

I have seen some threads that indicate a replaced wheel bearing could be the cause if it is third party and not a toyota OEM. I replaced the driver side front about 3 years ago. The thread said it could be the result of metal shavings from that bearing interfering with the ABS brake system. I have also seen some say that the sensor for the front bearing(s) could be faulty. I have seen other threads suggest that a older, dirty actuator on the transfer case for the 4wd could be the culprit and the best option might be to replace it.

I love this truck. I bought it in 2017 and it currently has 356,000 Km (221,000 miles) on it and runs great, burns no oil at all and is very reliable. Any help, thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    -----------------------------

Hey Guys. I have done some investigations on connectors, mostly looking for missing grounds. I also did check the ground strap on the engine block. Removed and clean3e the contact areas and bolt and tightened it fairly well when re-connecting it. The 4WD light is still flashing and not allowing the 4WD to engage.

However, one rather interesting fact I forgot to mention in my post here: If I connect my OBI scanner to the truck before I start it the 4WD light does not flash and the truck will go into 4WD High and Low without issue. Also the cruise which will not work when the 4WD light is flashing, works perfectly.
If I disconnect the OBI with the truck running the light start flashing immediately.

I was thinking this might be a clue for someone on this forum who knows more about the issue than I.

Any thoughts on this additional info would be greatly appreciated. I will continue with other investigative work using the very detailed post on the flashing 4WD light. Thanks much to all!
