Bfg ko2 sidewall blowout?

Sucks, had a tire blowout. KO2s with 40k miles. Daily driver, never offroaded significantly, rotated every 5-6k miles, 35 psi, e rated (on sale at the time).

Never had issues with it up to that point. Just sharing with the community.

 

Those tires were the shiznit 10, 15 years ago. Now, not so much now... They seem to be like every other product produced by the Chinese

 

You can see a small amount of cracking/dry rot but certainly not a lot.

What year were they produced? DOT date?

 

I thought this only happened to duratracs according to this site.

Sucks to see but you can see some signs of deteriorating closer to the wheel. I would suspect carcass that was starting to weaken and hitting somthing at some point weakened it.

As others pointed out take the dot and do a bit of digging around email bfg and see if there was potentially a bad batch at one point.

Looks like possible road hazard damage to me. Hit something or ran over something that took a chunk out.

 

Bummer either way, but I agree that this looks like road hazard damage to me. External deterioration looks superficial and acceptable for the age.

 

It looks like dry rot all around the circumference of the inner rim.

Michelin and BFG are the same company. I had an issue with Michelin's LTX ms2 tires blowing out years ago. I stopped buying them because the rubber compounds were so soft they'd start to dry rot before I got anywhere near the listed mileage out of them. I've heard several stories of blowouts and tread separation with K02's over the last few years.

A chunk is missing from the outside. Doesn’t look like internal defect. Also, these would’ve blown out many thousands of miles ago if it was defective or separating. This will happen to any tire that gets hit by something sharp on the outside. Don’t knock these tires for this kind of claim. Any tire company will deny a defective warranty claim for this.
This tire also has signs of under inflation. There’s a wear mark around the sidewall which is a tell tell sign of continued driving while under inflated. Let’s gather some knowledge about tires before spreading information.

In contrast, you had a puncture and got a flat.

 

Didn't knock on the tire, notice I said no problems until then. The wear is from driving 5 mph with it flat to the nearest exit because it was late at night. With tpms there's no reason to drive under inflated

Not sure what sharp object I would have hit, it was clear highway when it deflated straight to zero in seconds. Sure, could be possible. Just sharing my experience. Thanks for the responses

something went in it, not a blow out

 

My first set of KO2s saw about 12K miles of hard offroad. Never a flat or blowout.

My second set have about 8K offroad on them now. Same, no issues. I do a lot of hard sidewall scraping on rocks and trees on most trips. Half the trips are on deactivated roads, ATV trails, etc like the pic here.

With any tire from any brand, you can get defects. It happens.

 

BFG tires are made in USA. To the OP, stuff happens, and A LOT can happen to a tire in 40k miles to contribute to a blowout

 

35 psi is way underinflated for E rated TL tires. I know it's counterintuitive, but to maintain the same load capacity as the passenger rated tires that came oem, the tires should be inflated closer to 45psi. The sidewalls are thicker and stronger and will retain heat if they flex too much. Over time the extra heat will degrade the sidewalls. The door sticker should show the load capacity for the oem tire at 30 psi (or whatever the mfg recommended for your tire). If you use that load capacity as the start point and look up your tires on the BF Goodrich website, you will find a table that specifies load/psi.
