I've been trying to diagnose an issue I've been having while shifting into first, and decided to inspect my shifter bushing to see if it needs replacing. While I had the boot off, I saw what appears to be a 24mm bolt EXTREMELY loose with about half an inch of threads showing. Obviously it shouldn't look like this so I hand tightened it as best I could through the 2 inch gap in the floor. I'd like to make sure this bolt is secured right, but I have no idea what the torque specs are or even what the bolt is for. Pic below.

Is that the restrict pin in the below diagram? Looks to be 27 ft/lb (2003 FSM) Shows both 2 and 4WD , Doesn't look like you're 4WD(???)

    Edit: Simul-post, F means 4WD..

This may sound dumb, but I've done it. :-D Check the clutch fluid level, bleed it as well. It's one of those things you pop the hood and just overlook (or I did.) I was having progressive shift issues and although I can find no leaks, the fluid level dropped.

Yup! That's it! And yeah, this is 4WD, I just took the picture up close of the main shifter, the 4wd shifter is behind the camera.

I just replaced the master and slave cylinder to try and fix it, so I'm pretty sure that's not it. It does slip into first real easy when the engine is cold now, but once it heats up a bit the problem comes back exactly like before. It will shift into first fine when I'm going about 10mph or so but it's a coin toss from a dead stop.

Hmmm when the transmission is turning it shifts, dead stop it's difficult. Synchro transmission . . . I'll defer to the more experienced here but the first place I would look is clutch issues, not fully disengaging. When it's moving the syncro allows it to move into gear, dead stop nothing in the tranny is (should be) moving.

Lol, to make things even weirder, it shifts totally fine if the engine is off completely.
