That’s just a tired old catalytic converter, fairly normal.

If an injector was leaking the check engine light would flash.

Have you done anything to diagnose the source of the smell? Gas vapor is flammable (obviously) so you should be careful, and get it sorted. If you don't have tools or are mechanically inclined, you should just take it to a shop.

No it won't. Leaky injectors just make for very hard warm starts.

I'd wonder if you have rusted return fuel line?

Did 2000 have the vapor can under the bed? If that was cracked, you will have a check engine light.

Evap / fuel return system was my gut instinct as well. 03.5-04 had the evap moved from the engine bay to under the bed.

depends on the leak, if it’s leaking during operation it will 100% cause a catalyst damaging misfire, which is a flashing warning light

Miss fire will cause a code to be thrown for sure.

Not to add fuel to your debate fellas (see what I did there?), but a "leaky injector" could also imply the o rings or other seals which would dump gas onto the intake manifolds. Either way, the OP said the "rear of trk", which is more likely a fuel sending or return line, or even a seal on the tank. OP should take it to a shop.

That’s what I said, meaning no codes, unlikely it’s an injector

I was just referencing a scenario, and suggesting that it was not an injector.

It is possible that there’s a leaking tank or fuel line, that’s a good point.

I recently fixed a 'gas smell in the rear' with a new gas cap. I would think a vapor leaking gas cap would throw a CEL but did not.
    Sure was a cheap fix.

Mebbe fuel tank vent valve is cracked? Usually will throw a code, though.

    Hello, I'm new here.

I have a 2001 Tacoma 4WD MT extended cab. 128k live in the upper Midwest....read rust! I joined this forum to ask some questions about the rear diff and saw this post about another problem I have. I have a seeping at the seams gas tank. Get a good flashlight and you will be able to see the seepage point.

The problem is it's not leaking but for the repairs I have upcoming I need to use heat to remove almost everything. I can strip the problem fasteners out and then heat it or just heat the bolts/nuts red hot and they break free. But the gas tank has to be fixed or I know I will totally alter my life as I know it. I saw an elderly gentleman friend do something similar and hand both legs amputated from burn injuries.

My third member...the heavy carrier part is so rusted it is leaking and I think I can weld the problem areas. BUT the gas tank is right there and that HAS to go first! I was told JB weld might work as a temp fix if I grind and clean up really well. I might try that just to see if that stuff works. (until my used eBay unit gets here)

Seeping is leaking!!! No matter how you want to think it is not.

Drain and drop the tank!! Fix things correct!! If the tank itself has failed or it is from the fuel tank bracket area .

You might be just one hard bump from a major leak. Vehicle Fires are not Fun !

Grinder sparks can and will ignite gasoline fumes !! I was very lucky in my case !

If your swapping tanks plan on a fuel pump bracket and replacing fuel lines.

    Be careful Good Luck!

There is a 1"section on the side of the tank that appears to be the problem. Dry above and moist below....then it appears to gravitate all the way around the seam. No dripping so I characterize it as seeping. The truck had been sitting for about 3 months (because of leaking pinion seal) with 1/4 tank of gas and the smell and visual dampness around the seam went away. I had just replaced the pinion seal and filled the tank.I knew it would start smelling/leaking again. Then I could see on the diff that it was still dripping very slowly ,perhaps 1 drip an hour after driving. I bought a McGraw compact needle scaler and knocked off the 3/16" rust flakes at the point where the leak appeared to start. That opened up 1/8" hole. I kept going and the whole flat raised section at about 5 o'clock had dimples in it where you could visualize holes starting across the whole surface. I am sure I could mig weld a 10 ga. plate and seal the whole area up.I have a replacement third member an the way from South Carolina. I will try to rough up and seal the area with JB Weld just to see if it will work. I have never used that before...not my style.I weld stuff solid!
I already purchased a new gas tank, pump and pickup filter. The trouble is I am having back problems and crawling around under the truck is not good at the moment.
I purchased a 4x6 blanket from Yes Welder but I do not feel lucky at this point in my life! I may be 69 years young but it seems like my back has always been 69 years old! Pictures of the carrier that's coming. There is no rust an the new one.this.jpg
