Helping a co-worker out with his coolant leak. I'm not familiar with the 4.0 but today at work, I noticed coolant dripping from his Tacoma. Looked in the engine bay and pulled his plastic cover off and noticed coolant dripping from both cylinder heads. Seemed to be coming from a sensor, dripping downward. I borrowed this picture from a member from here and the area where its leaking from is circled in red.

We wiped it dried and started the truck and notice coolant leaking from that area on both heads. Can someone confirmed there's a coolant passage there and what is the sensor and if the o-ring (if there's one) can be change without buying the entire part?

    Thanks

According to diagram, the sensor is the VVT?

Those are the camshaft position (VVT) sensors, the only thing they could possibly leak from them is oil, if you have a coolant leak in that area it has to be coming from somewhere else.

Post a picture of your leak, I'm sure someone will know where it's originating from.

Understandable. The funny thing is all the coolant hose around the thermostat housing is dry. Shined a light behind the sensor and there's no dried red coolant. Seemed like the leak has been leaking for some time because there's thick dried coolant running down. We brushed off the dried coolant and he started the truck for about 15min and under pressure, you can see coolant seep from the VVT.

So he went home and cleaned the area pretty good because all the dried coolant is gone. But he said after it dried, he started the vehicle and can see coolant dripping from the sensor mounting from both head.

He said the portion behind the sensor is dry. Just wet around the sensor.

That’s freaking strange! There’s no coolant passage near those. Can he pull them out and check what they actually look like?

That's probably the next step if everything around there is dry.
