Has quite the blow by oil inside it.. good thing is I change my oil every 5k-7.5k miles and it looks nearly new out of the bottle in the canister but with that said I definitely wish I would’ve done this before 150k miles now IMG_6875.jpg IMG_6874.jpg

Wow. If you went offroading with that amount, all that might have been dumped back and cause hydrolock . Think steep inclines .

So the catch cans are bad if you actually off road? Please correct me on this*

    I’ll stop drinking water

On a serious note… I’ll just research this a bunch so I can actually learn the purpose of what the catch can is for!

I’m pretty sure the JL has a valve that does not allow it to be dumped back in but I could be mistaken.
That fear though is actually why I checked it after 3500 miles

Absolutely no problem when that stuff gets re circulated into the intake…

Use the right oil and intervals and all will be good.

It’s helpful on DI, or high performance engines. On Tacomas, it’s absolutely useless to be honest.

It’s the off camber situations off-road that will blow up the 3.5. For example idling for 5-10 minutes and it doesn’t matter catch can or not. In those situations it will blow quicker with a catch can.

So, my thinking is, the OP is showing fairly clean oil at 5K miles.
We also know that soot from the detonation is what makes the oil dark. Not dirt. Not metal shavings.
We also know that a bit of condensation gets into the intake, and even tho the heat will cause it to harmlessly evaporate, the catch can gets it while still liquid and adds to the lol bit of oil.
We also know that if there is enough soot in the oil it will turn to sludge and then varnish and all kinds of bad things.
So change the oil filter at some interval to get rid of metal, change the oil at some interval to get rid of the soot. Wait, what did the catch can do? The one that zero OEMs have on a NA engine? My vote is, the purchase of one helped a small business. That's all.
