I need to order a remanned engine. Are there any vendors or sites you would recommend.

Thanks. I'm enjoying the stress of spending thousands on my truck. Glad I can count on snarky answers.

Some people will say that the 1grfe is not rebuildable because it's sleeved, etc.
A few guys on here have rebuilt their own motor...

Regardless, I don't really know of a website that sells them remanufactured

Your best bet is used from plenty of different websites, wrecking yards, etc.

I would go with low mileage used from a reputable wrecker like car-part.com over remanned for sure

One morning I went to start it. I released the key too soon. That caused it to jump time. It may have caused damage to the pistons. To verify this I would be looking at $1,200 in labor from a very good mechanic. That's just to tear it down. My best route is to find a remanned engine with a warranty. My mechanic talked to a Toyota tech and found out this happens on this engine sometimes. I still owe money and wanted a Tacoma for years before I got it. I love my truck. We are a Toyota family. We have had 2 Celicas, which I really loved but are not fun to put car seats into, 3 Camrys, a Rav4, and now my Tacoma.

You could get a boroscope, pull the plugs and check yourself.

I did a google search remaned Toyota engines.
Turns up some, now if any have yours ready to go?
Sorry not much help but something to look at I guess.
But I’d agree a bore scope would be a good idea.

What are the symptoms? The 1grfe should be a non interference engine. So no impact with the valves.

I can't see how this engine could jump timing by not holding the key down.

For $1200 to just check I would just buy a bore scope pull spark plugs and take a look.

I just assumed you had the v6. Which engine do you have?

I think the 1GR actually is an interference motor, but don't really see how anything you do with the key is going to cause the timing chains to jump or break.

Renting a Borescope seems like a good idea. If a valve did hit the piston, you might be able to just pull that head, send it for reman, and reinstall. I've had success doing that in the past (non-toyota)

That's what I was curious about too—how does doing anything with your key affect the timing chain?

It most definitely IS an interference engine as almost all modern timing chain engines are. But jumping just one or two teeth will likely not make pistons smash valves. That said, I agree with the rest of your comment. It would be really strange for it to jump time from bumping the starter unless maybe the chain was already completely toast.

OP, who told you it jumped time and how did they check? The passenger side valve cover would need to come off…
And like others stated, you don’t check for this kind of suspected piston damage by pulling the heads off. Just simple bore scope thru spark plug tubes. It would be more likely for a valve to get bent anyway.

You definitely can’t make a timing chain jump timing by releasing the key at the wrong time.
Did you try to restart and it locked up or something. Could be as simple as the starter or solenoid went bad
